It is very difficult to choose a machine for someone else so I'll pass on to you the advice given to me from 'thesewingforum'
Spend as much as you can afford on your machine. You will be surprised at how quickly to might outgrow it's basic functions.
(This is true in your case as you already would like to try quilting and embroidery.)
I had a budget of £200 and a sewing teacher recommended the Janome 525s - £229. She said that the machine handles everything the students ask of it and they are steady, reliable machines.'
I managed to find a little more money and plumped for the SMD/Janome 5124 - £269. I'm really pleased with it and it handles multi layers of fabrics effortlessly. I specifically chose a machine with a seven piece feed dog knowing that I wanted to have a go at quilting.
I suggest you make a list of the things you want from your new machine and the projects it must work for you. Tomorrow when you can think a bit clearer have another look at the website. Choose a couple of machines you are interested in, then phone them for a chat about what they think would be a wise purchase for your needs. Make sure you choose at least one right at the top end of your budget, they may be able to come up with a good deal for you.
Please let us know which machine you decide upon, I'm quite excited for you. I'd love to have the money to upgrade as I would like more embroidery stitches.
Good luck and happy shopping.
Hi flossie217, I've just found this post of yours on a search, I realise it's a bit old - however, I'm thinking of buying a Janome 5124, and would love to hear your opinions of it, especially now you've had it a while. Thanks!!0 -

Sorry - don't know whether I've posted on here before but I've been following for a while. I don't get a lot of time to sew at the moment but I do have a few projects on the go.0 -

Thanks Rufusdog, I'd never thought of the weight thing with quilting fabric for quilts but I guess you do have to make sure they are of a similar weight. For bag purposes I don't suppose it matters so much because the bags need to be interfaced to give stability and some will also be fleece lined or have ultra firm lining for bags/shoppers that need to stand up. See, there's sooo much more to learn and sooo many lovely people to learn from.

Thats gorgeous again Pennib. I really like how you have your own brand, it is so recognizable as well.
I did some sewing this afternoon,
I have done four different ones using the picture that came with the embroidery threads I got from the charity shop the other day. I am going to use them as patches on some patchwork cushions I am going to do. There are photos of the other pansies on my blog.0 -
Thanks Rufus. I still can't post a comment on your blog, the word verification isn't coming up. Lovely pansies. How big are they? They are lovely colours nice and bright.0

I dont think I have the word verification set for my blog, I dont know how to do it?? The pieces of fabric are about 6 x 4 inches. I will cut them out as squares I think and then just add bits around them, I havent decided yet, sort of got an idea in my head but I will make it up as I go along and see how it looks. I have some scraps of lace I want to add in with it all too and I embroidered some sayings to go on the backs of the cushions for Mother's Day gifts may be.
I will go and have a look at my blog and see if I can work out how to add the word thing. Nearly everyone else has it that I go on anyway.0 -
Hi all
Have't been in here for an age as been busy trying to get my folksy shop selling. Has anyone here been buying fron prints to polka online? I remember some were a while back. I have been having the most awful trouble with them. They are the only place I have found to buy pul which I use for changing mats but my last order was made on 21/12 and I not got it and I have e-mailed them and they are not answering. Anyone else having problems?
Hi,
I think it was me you're thinking of, I posted a while ago about problems with prints to polka dots.
I did eventually receive my order from them, but it took a lot of badgering by email before it was dispatched, did you pay by PayPal? There should be a phone number on your invoice if so........
Just keep on at her is all I can advise, good luck
