    Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place to post or whether I should start a new thread but I've just started to sew clothes for my little boy and I have managed to get a bit of a fabric stash and I have my machine ready but I need all the other basics. So, what do I need and where's the best place to shop for them?

I had a little sewing kit with my machine but I think it's quite cheap and I'd like things that would last, so what do you use regularly?

    Thanks in advance

Hi, Welcome to the sewing room. We are a happy bunch and the more the merrier.!
Re the sewing kit, do you mean that you want better quality threads? Guttermans is a good one for machine sewing and hand sewing. I have used them for about 30 years. although I do use some cheaper ones for the basic black and whites, as they are expensive. There are a lot of tips, links and things on here and on the no chat sewing thread. Plenty of links to that as well, someone may come along and put a link in, I am not brilliant at trying to do that.

I have made 15 lavender sachets, and 3 aprons in the last 24 hours.! miracles among miracles.
I have also cut out another oven mitt for my dad. But I havent sewn it. Maybe tomorrow evening, but I have a lot to do so I will see.

Thanks, I'll have a browse, didn't know there was a no chat sewing thread. The sewing kit came with thread, scissors & pins but the thread doesn't look that good a quality neither do the scissors really.

Unfortunately then I am too much of a fatty and will have to lose somevweight before I can use a pattern to make myself some clothes.
Pogie, if you have a top that fits you nicely, you could try turning it inside out and using it as a pattern to cut out a new one,. Thats what I do. If you have one that is old and you dont want it any more then you could even unpick the seams and use the pieces as a pattern. I find them a lot easier to lay out and cut round too on the fabric as they dont move about.

I treated myself to some bits from Jackies Fabrics sale, the parcel came yesterday. I got three bits to make myself tops for the spring.

I am still waiting for my Jackie fabrics stuff. Also some from Abahkan? or what ever they are called. I ordered 3m red felt in the sale, amongst other things, so I could make some valentines hearts, but its not arrived yet. I think I need to start thinking about Mothers day instead at this rate.!
    Or next Christmas!

I've been thinking about Mothers Day already Mooloo, I have started embroidering some sayings to make some cushions for the shop. My fabric from Jackies came really quick, I ordered it Monday and it was here yesterday. Only thing was I was lucky it hadnt got pinched as the postman had left it in my front garden leaning up against the wall as we were out at the time.

I think I better dig out my order information and check it out then as I still havent had mine and it was over a week ago.

    Hi and welcome

If you have a boy to sew for I would definately reccommend "sewing for boys". I managed to win myself a copy but It was under £10 when I last looked on amazon.

There is a sew-a-long following patterns from the book here. I am going to try & upcycle our old clothes for most of the patterns.

For bits & bobs & cheap fabric, I have a fabricland near me, if you are "up north" there is abakhans. Also charity shops (old duvets & curtains, zips, buttons) can be good but many are those dreadful overpriced chain ones that "rag" 90% of donations.
  • I'm spending the day in the Sewing room today; every alternate Wednesday is a Stitching Witch day. On the agenda is one dress alteration, one quilt repair, one corset and matching skirt to make and possibly continuing to make my huge 8ft square quilt. Trouble is, I want to do my quilt but that's the one I won't get paid for so i need to be a bit disciplined today :(

I'm also being hassled for the contents for my website, but I'm no good at that side of the business. I'd rather be stitching than writing words for people to read. ;)

  • I've been updating a dress by taking it in, making a contrasting Peter pan collar and belt, and shortening it.
