With the quilting I find it best to tack the layers together before you start quilting. I was told when I first learned to tack both ways across the quilt and try not to leave more than 7 inches between the lines of tacking. Some people use large pins but I prefer tacking.

I swear by the re-positioning spray glue you can get its fab. Holds everything together perfectly and saves pinning.:T

hmo Your bag is lovely and with the little accessory. Bet she was made up.
  • Hello, newbie to the thread here, could anyone recommend a decent hand sewing cotton please? Ive been using some and it keeps knotting and driving me nuts!! THANKS EVER SO - I will endeavor to plough through some of this thread!

The spray glue sounds great I might have to investigate that I hate all the pinning and tacking. i'm currently making a make-up bag which is much harder than the crochet roll and I thought i was doing so well lol

When you hand sew the thread twists each time you do a stitch. To stop it tangling up, every few stitches hold the sewing up with the needle dangling down and it should untwist.

Love the bag hmo - a good idea to make matching purse & glasses case...might have a go with that idea next week, once I get my craft room back.

Going to have a day of planning wither tomorrow or Friday, jotting down ideas of what I want to make in the next few months. I also have some hand work to do for my quilting group.

More paid work today: IT this morning @ home, then invigilating this afternoon/early evening at college.

    Happy sewing everyone.

Ooh I am loving the apron idea!!! My Pops makes a mean BBQ and wears an apron. I have some material in blue and yellow as well actually!! My friend does embroidery too.

Brilliant. Any good patterns or tutorials that anyone knows of.

    Thanks so much :T:T

I've seen photos where someone made an apron for their husband by cutting of the legs of an old pair of dungarees, cutting the back & then trimming the sides - I'm sure they got the idea from the internet.

Happy New Year lovely sewing peeps :T

    Welcome to the newbies :)

Hart, the bag is lovely, gorgeous lining.

Thanks for the link to kindle/Ipad case tutorials, that's on my list.

The guinea pig cuddle case is toooo cute! Love GP's, my DD always had them as a child and they're so lovely, and they do love so squash into warm cuddly nests.

Laura16, the only blogger I've seen make underwear is Stitches and Seams I want to make some nice pyjamas/lounge wear in jersey, camisole tops and lounge pants type shenanigans, bit scared tho :o

And for those of us with machine problems/no time to sew/no sewing mojo...here's a fab nostalgia video ffrom the 40's of The Great Drapo, who makes evening gowns in seconds using fabric, elastic and pins without sewing a stitch :rotfl: The Great Drapo

Wow! He's fantastic. To be honest most of those dresses would still look good today. I love the wedding dress one for a last-minute wedding where the bride has nothing to wear :rotfl:
  • Wow Avstar that Great Drapo clip is fab!! I'll remember those for the next time I moan "I've got nothing to wear" now all I need is a spare bolt of fabric!! Ha,ha
