My OH came home yesterday from his trip to Asia and brought me home three lovely pieces of chinese brocade. I will get some photos done later on when he has finished with my camera and put them on my blog. Not sure what to make out of it all yet but I am sure I will think of something.

Thank you all SO much for the help with the machine, i've sat reading your posts getting my head round it all and have now stuck some little sticky labels to my machine so i have no excuses now lol.

One thing though i still confused about is the yellow, orange and purple boxes on the front (they're not buttons) so are they just to tell me what is possible by changing the zig zag width/stitch width? If that's the case then how do i do the purple ones (curvy stitch)

Curvy stitch is by your own making. You alter the length and width till you get the stitch you like. (Long straight stitch with a little width.) Just play around.

I went to China a few years ago and visited a silk factory. I couldn't buy any fabric as the weight restriction on internal flight were so low. :(

Cut out some bunting myself today. Next week DGD has a birthday party to go to. So I thought I would make one with the boys name on, as I dont have much money left this week, and wouldnt have a clue what to buy for a 4 year old boy if I had. Have also cut out his name on the Slice machine, ready to iron into place, and zigzag around. But will have to have a go tomorrow to finish it off.
I also dug out some bits and pieces of scraps on Friday, and think that one of the things I will make will be a bag for my laptop, so today I was looking at other bits to pad it etc, and will potter with the scraps to see what else I can make out of them. Perhaps its time for a few pin cushions and odds and sods like that with the smaller bits. We will have to see. I have got to the stage that I hate wasting any scraps these days!
When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.

Mooloo, I am with you on the scraps. I have shoe box size boxes and everything bigger than about an inch of fabric goes in them. I made up some pin cushions earlier in the year using some up but couldn't sell them so they are in a bag in the cupboard until someone else does a stall somewhere. I am after some ideas to use up the scraps on something I can put on my shop. I used some up making table runners and a few more with some table mats but I cant think of what else to use them for that I can sell on.

Kirstie Allsopp made crazy patchwork Christmas stockings on Homemade Christmas the other year - the tutorial is still on the C4 website. If you look on flickr, there are lots of crazy patchwork quilts and makes. :)

I have given blood this morning. Unfortunately my sewing brain cell was in that pint  I have just spent an eternity unpicking some very small stitching.

  • i have just bitten the bullet and ordered some fabric, have bought dd (and myself!) joint xmas present of a sewing machine, slow enough that dd can use it on her own. Todays order was lots of different coloured felts from fabricland, i have been scouring the internet for projects and am going to make her some 'kits' as part of her christmas presents, including i think - stuffed hearts, a teddy, a bag already cut out and ready to sew. and maybe an owl and a mouse. I also bought some of the 1.25 a metre flowered fabric and a few of the £3 metre pretty fabrics (butterflys) so she has some different ones to chose from that i won't be too precious about her cutting.

can anyone please advise me on left handed embroidery scissors.. i found some on ebay but they looked to be both left and right (not order just one) and this seemed a bit wrong to me. Are there any left handed sewers out there that can advise me on which small scissors they have had success with please

HMO the wreath is gorgeous - lovely fabric.

Rufus, the brocade sounds lovely - can't wait to see what you make with it

Oh dear Rikki, I feel your pain, my seam ripper (quick unpick) is my best friend and worst enemy! :rotfl:

Not had chance to do any sewing for weeks other than a couple of sock monkeys I posted on the sock monkey thread. I'm struggling to knit them a scarf each, done 1 and now need to do another but it takes me aaaages!
