i have just bitten the bullet and ordered some fabric, have bought dd (and myself!) joint xmas present of a sewing machine, slow enough that dd can use it on her own. Todays order was lots of different coloured felts from fabricland, i have been scouring the internet for projects and am going to make her some 'kits' as part of her christmas presents, including i think - stuffed hearts, a teddy, a bag already cut out and ready to sew. and maybe an owl and a mouse. I also bought some of the 1.25 a metre flowered fabric and a few of the £3 metre pretty fabrics (butterflys) so she has some different ones to chose from that i won't be too precious about her cutting.

can anyone please advise me on left handed embroidery scissors.. i found some on ebay but they looked to be both left and right (not order just one) and this seemed a bit wrong to me. Are there any left handed sewers out there that can advise me on which small scissors they have had success with please

At the schools where I have worked, they mostly use "both-handed" scissors. They simply have both blade edges sharpened.
  • I did really well at the CB yesterday. There was a stall selling a heap of fabric remnants/sample pieces all really BIG pieces.

I managed to pick up -
Mahoosive length of large floral linen (possibly blend) must be about 10m
another large piece of patterned linen 6-8 metres
Large piece of pink & brown poly 3-4m
small (1m) piece brown linen (possible cushion covers)
small (im) piece of what I thought was small floral cotton but now it has been washed feels & smells like silk.

All for £10. One of the linens says "John Kaldor" on the selvedge.

I have washed it all already as it had got slightly damp from the grass/drizzle, but the linen washed really well, went crumply but didnt crease.

I must try harder next year to make myself some clothes, now that I have all this fabric (and not to mention patterns) My first attempt at cutting out a pattern went a bit wrong & it has put me off. My new years resolution perhaps lol!

Although they were expensive the best Left Handed scissors I have ever bought came from 'Anything Left Handed' they do all sizes.
  • That's a nice idea for your dd poppy-glos to make up some kits.
Managed to do a version of the CK tote for my Aunties xmas pressie, was really quite pleased with it. Lengthened a curtain to keep the draughts at bay from the back door by sewing 2 together. Have started on a jewellery roll, have got to sew a zip on, building myself up to it! Took me long enough to realise I had a zipper foot on my machine and put it on so we'll see how it goes when I've found the confidence to try it.

Zippers are easy peasy with a foot, compared to how I learned from my Mother in the 70's. Mine has the option of left or right setting on the needle so you can move it in close, for a nice accurate line.
Why not find an old zip in something that has busted remove it and do a practice run and see how it all works. You can then unpick and fiddle until you get it right.

Left and right scissors are great. Mum had to get them as she was right handed, but us three daughters are all lefties :D:D

LOVE the fabrics Rufus, and all the other other bits your DH brought you, he is a wonderful man to bring you all those goodies!

Go for the fair, you have such wonderful stuff to sell. I am doing two in three days (not what I planned originally!). Still worried I won't have enough stuff made, so off now to make more xmas trees to stuff. Will post piccies once I have finished adding beads etc.

Have a great day everyone xx

  • hi all

thanks for the tip on the scissors Marg, i'm going to invest in some for christmas for dd.

today i checked out the sewing machine ( unboxed to check all there and in working order ready for xmas morning), very exciting, i set it up, wound a bobbin, and did a trial on all of the stitches except for the button holes. it all works ok so have packaged up and now hidden again ready for christmas.
