I'm going to do a wee bit of research about this tutoring idea....I'll maybe ask the lady in the local fabric shop if I can put a wee notice up to gauge interest...
  • I have thought about private tutoring for sewing also. I do it for machine embroidery, but wasn't sure about the need for general sewing.

I suppose I have always thought that there wouldn't be a need for basic sewing, but perhaps I am wrong.

It would be a good idea to investigate the local haberdashery shops etc. to see if they can put up a card.

I might be totally wrong too in thinking there might be any interest in it! :D

All I know for sure is that there's been a massive (like 80%) increase in the sales of sewing machines over the last year, and I keep seeing so many people on these boards saying they have machines, but don't know where to start.
I'd LOVE to do machine embroidery!

You should start a thread with a poll attached to give you an idea of whether people generallly think its a good idea. I know it will be more of an overview as people all live in different areas but might at least become obvious if its something people would pay for or not.

Just out of interest, where are the best places to buy Cath Kidson-esque material (ie generic flowery material) at moneysaving prices? I love the design but I dont want to pay for the brand if there are similar products out there? and also the best place to buy funky, printed material (by that i mean cute animals, foodstuff, nature, spots and stripes etc)

Globaltex do some nice fabrics in spotty and flowery patterns which are in a very Cath Kidston style. I get mine from a local fabric shop but I know that there are sellers on Ebay. http://www.globaltex.co.uk/collection.php?hdnCollectionID=38#

I've used that Ebay seller in the past and they were very good.

    HTH
Cos I don't shine if you don't shine.
  • It would be interesting to find out how much they would be willing to pay too, I never know how much to charge. I find it easier giving a price for someone else, but when it comes down to myself, I say a price and then reduce it before the other person has time to answer - obviously I am not a good business woman.

I hope you live near me! I'd love a sewing tutor - I looked into doing a course at my local college (where I work) but they don't offer anything other than fashion A-level which isn't quite what I was after :o Plus I work full-time so couldn't go to lessons in the day. More along the lines of using the different sewing machine feet (for buttons and zips), doing different stitches, and so on. Good luck with it - good idea :T

Your soap looks good enough to eat stardrops!

A tutorial on your blog sounds great I will definitely stay tuned!

I also LOVE your owl plushies and am thinking about making something similar but filling it with rice to use as a doorstop for my daughters room, not sure if it would topple over but might give it a go. Id also like to make a draught excluder if I can find some nice reds/browns/bieges so it matches the living room, I like the look of the cat ones on Etsy but i think that would be to complicated for me and take ages, I need to build up confidence in my sewing abilities first.

Here are a couple of my monkeys, not half as good as yours but they are my better ones, and my 1 and 3 year olds seem to like them so thats the main thing!- not sure if I should sew the hat to their heads though as they keep coming off! Iv tried so many times to learn to knit but I just cant do it so had to make do with making friendship bracelets for the scarfs and using part of another sock for the hats.

Me again  I :heart:The Eternal Maker and Fabric Rehab. I normally do little projects which feature a kookie fabric (with cupcakes on, or dogs, music notes, etc.) along with a plain linen so the fat quarters are ideal, plus the designs are so different. Enjoy :)
