I'm a department manager in Asda, believe me it can happen. I have seen a 19-year old girl taken by the arm from her checkout mid-shift because she didn't ID a 24-year-old gent sent in as a test by Police sitting in the foyer. Most Asda stores are tested twice a month along with tests on que length, happy to help, clean as you go. They're not management enforcements, they're government enforcements. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

It does sound ridiculous but they've probably been drilled into taking side of caution which is the sensible way around. Sounds like in this case they're taking that to extreme and only accepting ID and not bothering with visually filtering people. I very much doubt it's store policy which is why I'm wondering if you'd asked to see manager.0

I don't see the problem, it's helping reduce the amount of alcohol sold to underage kids, that can't be a bad thing. If you get caught up in this it may be annoying for you, but think how many underage kids are being stopped from buying alcohol?
In America they have an under 30's policy. Dh was pleased to be ID'd there last year when he was 43 years old, I am the same age but they didn't ask me. America doesn't have the underage alcohol abuse levels that we do either.:hello:0 -
Simple then -pay out £50 (the cost of a provisional licence) to shop at Sainburys or do the sensible thing and vote with your feet and go to a retailer who trains their staff properly.
Pretty easy decision on a money saving website I think
Sounds to me certain people on here are under the age anyway making comments like that. The girl was doing her job. Im sure most people would appreciate that rather than the alternative, underage being able to gain access to age restricted products ... anti social behaviour ... kids drinking on the streets, carrying knives, causing trouble?? A lot of fuss is being caused over Sainsburys being responsible employers. If you dont like it, shop elsewhere!0 -
Get a Citizencard. I don't have a passport or driving license but got ID'd quite often. It's accepted most anywhere (particularly in supermarkets), has the PASS hologram, and it only costs £10. Although typically, since I got it I've only been asked to produce it a few times! So age must finally be catching up to me! (I'm 30 by the way)Do good deeds and you could raise the curtain, do good deeds and you could really raise your life....0

Speaking to a manager would have been pointless as most major supermarkets have a "You say no, we say no" policy where if a sale of an age restricted product is denied or ID is requested, no one in the store will over ride the checkout operator, As it would be the operator getting the £5,000 fine if the person was indeed underage.
Don't see how if it's another member of staff giving the transaction at that point."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Because the management will support the checkout operators decision and refuse to serve the alcohol because they are unable to provide ID0 -
Gees I think the OP is making far to much of a big deal about this, so what if you get ID'd at 20, 25,30, 35 etc...have some ID on you and show them.
The person serving you gets into trouble if you are underage and when I worked in retail I would always check peoples ages!!!Always ask ACAS0
