Totally right heatheryone no one can be arrested for not checking ID. They can only be done for selling alcohol to under age people, under 18. The Think 25 policy is set to make sure no one manages to buy alcohol if they are under 18.

  • I had my ID checked everytime I bought wine over xmas, I am 24..abut I can also see how its hard to tell the 19-25 yr old bracket. So I am not offended - they are only following policy

I just show my provisional and thats that.

Refusals are checked by trading standards but it isn't law that they are recorded, it just shows you are checking. It gives them a decent defence if they are caught at a later date. When I say defence I actually mean they can blame the poor checkout assistant. The other part of the defence is their training record card.

    yes i understand
  • To the OP - yes its totally silly.

Your 11 years older than the legal age to buy it!!!

Im sure it was just a one off - someone either not checking or would be rubbish at playing Guess Who!!

An Army ID isn't accepted as a proof of age, the same as a Police ID card isn't. Stores have strict rules for things like this and to pass checks they have to be followed. Operators can be sacked and fined for accepting a Police ID believe it or not.

Which is daft as it's issued effectivly by the government, has a photo printed onto it & shows your height, dob, rank & service number.

Maybe the checkout assistant was new? Had her doubts? Got told to be stricter? Had visits from head office saying they weren't doing a good enough job?

But how many people know what they look like. It could be anything that someone has produced on their computer. That is why they have a short list of things, passport, driving license or card with PASS hologram on. That way people only have to know three things. If you accepted Army cards what about other employer cards, eg Inland revenue, tax office etc or maybe Littlewoods?

exactley, if they keep the list of accpetable ID to a minimum then its easy for the staff to remember

I think the cashier did the right thing. It is very hard to tell someones age and the cashiers have to make quick on the spot decisions. I hold an alcohol licence and am the DPS of a retail store and I would always rather refuse a sale than risk prosecution by serving under age. The cashier themselves risks at best an £80 on the spot fine and the store can have their premises licence revoked.
On the flip side I am also 26 and get ID'd every now and again in the supermarkets, but I know this is the way things have to be, and understand if I am asked and dont have ID I cant buy.

Requesting for the manager would have not made any difference, as a supervisor for Sainsburys i cant overide a till operators decision when it comes to customers not having any ID, the girl was just doing her job. Its not the end of the world, get over it!
