As always on this site there will be the one person who cannot read or intake properly what is written..i said i was moving some of the books into the garage..NOT throwing them away NOT getting rid just MOVING..they are in the garage as there is no room for them in the house and when he wants needs them that's where they are. Unfortunatly i am not willing to clutter the house up with thousands of books and that's that, dh has known that from day 1 so? i don't do it so why should he seeing as he gets annoyed with mess just as much as me..unfortunatly he is messier than me and doesn't always notice.0 -
Gosh, reading some responses here you'd think that getting rid of books was tantamount to killing babies!
I like to read, but if I kept every book I'd ever read I wouldn't be able to move in my flat. Besides donating old books to charity makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :rotfl:
Keep the best and fling the rest - but only if they're actually YOURS to get rid of - if they belong to your DH, all bets are off, he's got to decide which ones to keep/store/dispose of.
Exactly thanks Kate, i agree he can keep them all if he wants..just not in the house!!0 -

If someone tried to put my beautiful 500+ in some garage there'd be Words!
My OH has over 1000 books, all in bookcases behind glass (doesn't collect dust).
I hate clutter, my home is clutter free and very clean, (a cluttered home cannot be cleaned throughly), its all about being organised, instead of shopping, reorganise your home, starting with the kitchen drawers and cupboards, you will be amazed with what you do not need.
A clutter free home helps to keep it tidy, and very easy to clean and most of all a stress free home . I can lay my hands on anything immediately, phone charger, a pen of your colour choice, and even an elastic band.
If you have Sky or cable, watch the Perfect Housewife programmes, they gave me loads of tips, Anthea does go slightly over the top but in the main, her ideas work.0 -

another break
Right that's good enough. Reached 83 out of target for 100. Too hot to do any more.
Going to start a fresh declutter 100 things in 10 days from tomorrow. It's hard going but it's beginning to make headway. I want to move furniture around the house and can't do this until have decluttered some more.

lauraspaghetti i hate having the cupboards empty tbh i like that inbetween bit, dh likes to know if one of us loses our jobs or something we will have food to eat! he has a point..last week my friend had my dd for dinner she rung me in a panic as hadn't gone food shopping and they had nothing in the house, i had to take something to her which is madness..a bit extreme i know but still..again i want food in but we don't need 13 packs of rice!
I think you should 'shop' from your cupboards every week and make a list of the minimum you need to buy for a week's meals. That way the stocks will go down and you will have money for a rainy day rather than piles of stuff cluttering your house.0 -
Hi OP
We are a family of book hoarders too! I have two children who are complete bookworms so to me I can justify it lol! The way I get around it is there are lots of bookshelves in the spare room and study and there are magazine racks or I have recycled the boxes from the works Christmas hampers into the bathrooms. All of the magazines and books go into there so I can keep them tidy.
Once a year they all have to have a trawl through the bookshelves to recycle the books they didnt think were that good/wouldnt read again and they go off to the library at work or the charity shop, so doing their bit for the flow of books :rotfl:
It used to drive me potty the books and the magazines in the toilets so now I just accept that it wont change and make it easier for them to keep it tidy. It works!!Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0 -
