But can I ask, where did you start? I really feel overwhelmed with it all, I have dreams of living this life where everything has a home and is in it.
I think it will only ever be a dream for me.
You have to start at the beginning: the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time!
Start off by cleaning out 1 drawer or shelf. Allow 15 minutes, or longer if you want, and achieve that. Then next time, do another drawer or shelf.
It is overwhelming to start with, but if you tackle it a little bit at a time it gets done eventually. Be ruthless as well: if you haven't used something for over 6 months, if you don't need/want it any more, out it goes. Try looking at the Flylady site (sorry can't post links yet but just google it), she tells you to take 'baby steps'. It didn't get cluttered up overnight so it won't be decluttered overnight. Personally I get everything that I'm decluttering that day in a pile and take a picture of it, put it on my Flickr with an explanation of what it was, why I got rid, and where. It really helps to go back and look at the amount of stuff you've got rid of.
Take your time and it will get done...!

I need a kick up the bum! Am in work on dinner break at the moment and won't be home until 5.30. Then I'm going out at 7 for my exercise class. However I am desperately trying to de-clutter as I'm hopefully moving house in a few weeks. So in that short hour and a half I am going to:
Make and eat tea
Post some things that have sold on ebay
Make packed lunch for tomorrow
Take pictures of clothes for ebay
Tidy away all the mess on the table
Do one load of washing

Love your idea of a road kill jar! I have had to wean myself off physical jars (they were becomming ermmm clutter) so have virtual ones now on a spreadsheet - except for my £2 beloved pretty jug on the kitchen window sill. It currently has £ 97 in it! How did that happen - a £1 coin slipped in and I havnt the heart to evict it! I will bank it when it gets to £100 - which seems a shame BUT my logic is that those £2 coins will go back into circulation and help all fellow collectors. If I just spend the coins I will simply put them back into the jug so thats a groundhog loop from which I will never escape.
Out this morning :
kitchen and bathroom bins contents
all recycling into boxes outside
In: Groceries
And I have taken the under sink bin apart and cleaned it thoroughly - now its nice not manky.:TStay clutter-free
No new stuff unless to replace broken items that are essential.
£2 savings pot (started Oct 09) £182 so far (£100 of which is banked)
Roadkill jar (found money) 87p and 20 eurocents0 -
OK I have made a start since the last post.
I have de cluttered the bottom of the stairs.
OUT
Old letters from the school.
DVD that has never worked.
Odd socks.
Tacky necklace (not sure who this belonged to)
Cross stitcher mag.
There was loads of stuff there but the rest has been moved to more appropriate places.
Learn German CDs
Bag of toiletries from staying out at New Year!
Clothes same as above!
Also vacuumed the stairs so that is a good startEbay 13........1583.46/2000.00 Amazon sales 54/50 Etsy sales 63/50

Afternoon all and welcome 415sanfran
Organised the ‘Bermuda triangle’ draw in the kitchen last night whilst cooking tea! You know the one… it’s where every miscellaneous item gets shoved!
In: post and another empty charity bag!
Out:
Takeaway menus recycled (kept Chinese and pizza one for emergencies)
Bits of carp out of ‘Bermuda’ draw but at least we can now see what’s in there
Empty can of shaving foam recycled
Empty tin of Quality Street (now in garage as OH rescued it but will be recycled after a month if I find he’s not found a use for it)
Pending: Charity bag out first thing tomorrow morning
415sanfran, I tend to spend an hour a night decluttering either a draw, shelf, 'hot spot' area in the house. Sort a kitchen draw whilst doing the dinner or when you put your socks away. I started at the beginning of the year with my hour a day and now I can really see the areas I've decluttered. If you introduce it too your daily routine you'll soon start to feel empowered that you're getting rid of so much carp!! It helps to post on here too as we all motivate each other to keep de-cluttering!!!
emptynester how is your mom?
