it depends where you are - maybe a homechecker could be found via dogpages or RHU0

I need advice already on transporting Paddy, but feel so downhearted for Lowis. So much hope now dashed.
Yes, had all been local, I would have been checked by now and Paddy home. Oh, he is here btw. http://www.wagtails-rescue.co.uk/Rehoming/paddy.html
Homecheck tomorrow (Wed. 30/12/09 at 11.30 am.)
How to bring him home over a three hour journey?
Rescue insist on a cage, otherwise could be dangerous. ??? WHY?
If Paddy comes home with me, he will never see the World or me through bars or mesh ever again after he leaves his prison.
I wish him to be on the passenger seat, clipped through his harness to the seatbelt. Normality as I see it.
Three hours home plus a bit after we stop for a stroll and a bit of cheese and carrot.
He will be next to me, I can tell him all or nothing. I will probably bore him to sleep. Hope he likes Michael Buble and the Killers!
I said earlier to rescue, maybe I should come down for a few days. get to know Paddy, drive him in my car and see how we go?
I will do anything, but I will not employ a cage either in the car or here at home.0 -
aw Mutter...i am everything crossed for you! i was on tenterhooks like you when i adopted Timmy - i live on the 11th floor and was absolutely paranoid i would be refused adoption for that reason. as you know, it all went well in the end.
we wish you all the best for tomorrow! xxx0 -
If the rescue insist on a cage for the journey home it is perhaps because there have been a few tragic cases recently of rescued dogs escaping from cars on transport runs, often at service stations stops (I remember at least one of these where the dog got onto the road and was sadly killed), and/or because the rescue is worried that should he play up in the car and you have an accident as a result that they would be partly responsible.
Stressed dogs have been known to chew through harnesses, or to wriggle out of one etc etc..
They are trying to minimise all risk to the dog and to you on the journey home, which I can appreciate. Obviously, after you have him home, how you transport him will be your business, but by then you will have some experience of him and a bond with him, and can choose accordingly.
To be honest, I would respect their wishes, and the good intentions for both the dog and the new owner that they represent, and borrow a cage for the duration of the journey.
ETA - he looks lovely!0 -

Well, how did it go and have you thought any more about borrowing a crate to take him to his forever home?
I'm on blimming tenterhooks here and need to be put out of my misery asap.
I must say, he's a very handsome fellow.0 -

I wish they'd insisted on a cage when I brought mutt home. Luckily mum came with me, as the poor dog was so stressed she went totally ballistic in the car. Cue nightmare journey up the motorway with mother driving, me in the back seat trying to hang onto mutt while she scratched and bit my arms trying to escape. The harness was off in 30 secs. And she messed all over the back seat where she couldn't control herself.
Neither us nor the rescue were expecting that, so if (when) I get my next dog, I'd definitely go for playing it safe.
Hope all goes well for you.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
