All Fingers and Paws Crossed for HIM and Me.

For those who don't know, I lost my beloved Jaffa, an orange and white Cocker Spaniel in May this year at the age of thirteen.
He and me were 24/7, and predicted by my Vet to live at least until fifteen, until he suddenly developed a very aggresive tumour.
I vowed never again as most of you have I'm sure, the pain being so great.
However, yes like you too. As the grief lifted, I realised life is not complete without a four legged companion, preferably one who woofs.
I decided to spend a Year, not only to properly get over Jaf's death, (the tears are flowing again), but to research and seek out Breeders who not only carry out all health checks possible, but breed for temperament and sturdiness.
So all being well, I would put my name on waiting lists for a darling puppy in Spring.
"Best laid plans" and all that.
I've only seen a middle aged Cocker on a rescue site. It goes against all my beliefs of getting a pup as mentioned above.
It is a small rescue three hours away from me.
Rescue centre: Are you really willing to travel all this way?
Me, Yes, I travelled five hours each way for my last dog.
RC. He and another were at the Vet to be PTS after the death of his owner, when my friend intervened and saved him. He does have separation anxiety issues, have you ever dealt with with this?
M: No, I have had three dogs in the past forty years, all pedigree pups, a Dalmation and two Cockers. How does his SA manifest itself?
RC: He whines as soon as he is left, but it can be overcome.
What you do need to realise, is a rescue dog wants to be at your side at all times, never out of sight.
Adopting a rescue dog is very different to rearing a puppy.
M: Both my Cockers were the same, I think it's a breed trait, not just rescue issues.
My daughter is staying here for a couple of days, we'd love to meet him to see if he likes us and we like him. If we get on together, far better he is here as family than in a kennel.
RC: We will need to homecheck you, do you have a rescue nearby we can ask? (Gave them a name)
This was all this morning, have not heard back yet.
I thought from reading here that adopting an older dog was a doddle compared to a pup. Not according to this lady it isn't!
In fact after rearing three dogs with wonderful temperaments but totally different characters and personalities, I'm feeling rather inadequate, not to say nervous I may be refused. Him there frightened of the future, me here wanting to love him.
Another fear is, ........ what for any reason I didn't like him on sight or he doesn't like me. I couldn't leave him there!
If he comes home, that's it. Together forever, which is why the "maka rehoming thread" makes me so sad. One out, one back in as it where.
Keep your fingers crossed please, one is out and home with me at least. Thanks.

The Legacy
When humans die, they make a will
To leave their homes and all they have to those they love.
I, too, would make a will if I could write. To some poor wistful, lonely stray I leave my happy home,
My dish, my cosy bed, my cushioned chair, my toy.
The well loved lap, the gentle stroking hand, the loving voice,
The place I made in someone's heart,
The love that at the last could help me to a peaceful painless end
Held in loving arms.
If I should die, Oh do not say,
"No more a pet I'll have,
to grieve me by it's loss"
Seek out some lonely, unloved dog .And give my place to them.
This is the legacy I leave behind -
'tis all I have to give.
Hope all goes well0 -

Thanks gettingready, that is lovely. Any idea who by? I will print and keep it, Thankyou.
If I get to him, I shall bore you all, with pics of him behind bars to being home for ever here, or wherever next. Though he would never be left or given back.0 -

The poem is anonymous, sadly - I have searched for the author before, but no luck.

Good Luck xxDo not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup0

I need a home check doing as the rescue is too far away.
I have sent a link to them for The Oldies Club who have volunteer checkers throughout the Country, though whether one Charity would help another, I simply don't know.
Any other suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks to all for your good wishes.0
