Parent and child parking

Well, this is an often posted question and it usually elicits the same two responses. From those who think they should have them because they cannot get a child out of a car on a car park or walk them safely into the store, and from those who cannot see the need for them.
I fall into the latter camp, and before you label me a male, child hater, let me enlighten you......I am female, have 4 kids, and can park on a supermarket car park in a normal sized car, in a normal sized space get a babyseat out and restrain my kids long enough to get them into the store safely, without scraping the car next to me.
P&C spaces are a sop to the vocal mummy brigade who cannot park ordrive their 4x4's, or maybe just cannot park full stop, maybe they are convenient to have, but they are not a right, and not a necessity.
They may not be a right, but if there is a sign there saying who can park there it should be adhered to. Also, the supermarket i go to puts the trolleys for car seats etc right next to these spaces. This is supermarkets and the like trying to make life a little easier for us.
I, by the way, have a ford focus - not a 4x40 -

Generalise much?! But no, they're not a right, nor a necessity. But then neither are a lot of things that we take for granted. If a store wants to offer little things to entice us in, then you'd be mad to refuse.
For what its worth, when my kids were little, we walked to the supermarket unless it was a mammoth shop.Earn £10 a day JAN: £92.23 / £310 :j ...............NSD Jan 2/10

ok i will be honest i use the parent and child because i have a zafira (even without the kids) because i struggle to get in the small spaces, when i have youngest i use disabled has he has a blue badge, i need a zaffia to fit his buggy into so i can see from both points of view , its a tuth one tho we moan when we need help (parent parking ) and then when we get them it upsets other people, yes we didnt have them when i had oldest, but at the same time if my youngest was born 30 years ago he would be classed as clumbsy and wouldnt get ant help, i know im a hipo cryet but just being honest , think people should just acept moving forward as a good thing0

I agree. Its not disadvantaging anyone to help those that are slightly more disadvantaged (if that makes sense!) I'd prefer to live in a progressive society that helped people out than one where the masses thought, "Eff you, you're on your own!" If we just accepted the status quo, we might still have the "No Irish, No women, No coloured" signs on shop doors.Earn £10 a day JAN: £92.23 / £310 :j ...............NSD Jan 2/10

I have no particular objections to them being there, but I do object to the sense that they are a right, they are a concession, not a right, so if they are not available park elsewhere, don't moan.
Nor do I think it is helpful or accurate to equate the issue with real dicrimination or injustices, such as in the post referring to irish people etc. P&C spaces may be a convenience but no one can pretend they are a necessity,or a social requirement/morally right.0 -
I'm another mother who doesn't see the need for P&C spaces, I'd rather they put them right at the back of the car park and made a safe path to the shop if parents feel the need to have a wider space. I'd much rather have they be used for disabled spaces.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

I'm annoyed! These parking spaces should be for people with SMALL (ie:young) children and the signs should be more specific. I have just, for the billionth time, had to struggle getting my baby in and out of the car and seen parents with bloody teenagers using these spaces. Grrrrr. Hey-ho, before anyone else says it, i probably should have thought twice before having kids or transporting them in a car.
How old is your baby?
I don't understand why you'd need more room than a fully grown adult to get out of the car."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

I parked next to an old Morris minor about a week ago and realised how tiny older cars were..
Maybe it is time we all got together to demand that the legal minimum for parking spaces was widened ..My last car had a matching dink in 3 doors from the higher doors on 4wd hitting the center of my car door .
New cars ,even small new cars have a much bigger footprint than 20 or 30 years ago I drive a Hilux at work and that got me a parking ticket in Manchester as I could not park without overhanging the space by half a car length.
Don't blame the users ..Make something that better reflects the users demands0 -
i dont think they are a right, if you get cought in tescos abusing it you can get a fine, sames as parking on double yellows etc , but i do agree with some of the posts about opeaning doors etc maybe we should all agree theres no right or wrong anserw?
The OP clearly thinks they are a right, and one confined to those with babies ........in a few years I suspect her age range will rise to accomodate her older child;)
All it takes is a bit of care to get a car seat out, and the ability to park correctly between the lines.0
