She has one friend who isn't even allowed into the town centre here on her own yet - they're 14 this year! Sadly they have stopped inviting her to join them at things as there's 'no point' (their words not mine) and she gets embarrassed ...
DD had a frined like that. She was walked to and from school until she left primary school. She was then driven to and from high school (about 10 min walk away  ). When she was about 13 her parents started to have problems and she was allowed out all of a sudden. She was engaged at 14, and you can probably fill in the rest  Poor girl - whe's back on the rails now, but talk about one extreme to another
I'm fed up as it's the end of holidaysBeen doing some needlepoint, and been for a walk in the snow with DH, but I can't settle to anything now. I'm planning a huge declutter this year, but won;t start until I have the house to myself. Maybe I'll start on my tapestry threads

I need to lie down....I have been flying:eek::Dxx
So have I.. I had to come back to bed!!She has one friend who isn't even allowed into the town centre here on her own yet - they're 14 this year! Sadly they have stopped inviting her to join them at things as there's 'no point' (their words not mine) and she gets embarrassed ...
I wouldn't let my 15 year old go to Leeds or Bradford with her friends either.. it is a strange town to her and even though her friend who is 16 goes all the time on her own I wouldn't trust her not to leave DD1 stranded and alone..Penelope_Penguin wrote: »DD had a frined like that. I take mine to school right through primary school.. and I fully intend to until they are sensible enough to cross busy roads themselves. I also walk/bus them to school the first few weeks at high school so I know they know exactly where they are going and how to get there. Even then DS2 got lost.
I don't let mine go into the town centre alone either until they are 15/16.. they have no reason to go.. most things are cheaper online anyway.
I don't think it is being over-protective, it is realising what is necessary and what is not. They do have one friend though who isn't even allowed to come to her friends houses, that is silly!.. I even offered to speak to her dad and invited him over for coffee so he had met us and didn't think we may be some loony family.. she has missed so many parties and sleepovers and dinners, but her mum has mental health issues and her dad relies on her to care for her 4 younger siblings which I think is appalling but she is a lovely well adjusted girl, so who knows?!

It's a fine balance. You can be too liberal (which is why the tyke across the road has been enrolled at 4 different secondary schools (he's a Y10) and doesn't seem to go to school ATM and has 'ladies' coming knocking on the door sometimes (I am guessing they are social workers or some such) and walks out of his house smoking...
or too restrictive.
I believe that, in the main, keeping them in and ferrying them around DOESN'T keep them safe because they are unable to cope when things 'go wrong'. And eventually they start to rebel. letting her out NOW would be a good idea, none of them are into boys yet anyway and they would just go shopping and to the pictures. Like normal young teenagers. Instead she sits in the house and plays on a Playstation, so I am told.
Thing is Pigpen, yours is a big town/city. This is a little town with a small town centre. It does depend on the kids, too. I wouldn't be happy about her going into Sheffield City Centre on her own but Meadowhall is different, as she can get public transport directly there. They tend to go in a group of 4, too, and DD is a sensible girl. And I used to take the kids there myself on public transport, so they are familiar with it!
I have also discussed with the kids what they would do if/when things go wrong, including how to contact me if they lost their phones.
We 'fed' DD (and DS) into walking to school on their own at primary, in the last year. But it wasn't just a case of sending her out one morning to do the whole walk; as she had a 'busy' road to cross so she would be walked to that road and met there at the end of the day and crossed it on her own, but under supervision.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016
Thank you Honey Bear0 -
Finished my typing :j:T:j:T
Tea's in the cooker ssssshhh, only fishfingers, chips and peas - nothing fancy, I do like the sounds of the lamb shanks someone is cooking which sounds MUCH nicer! and just about to get out DD's uniform and hang it on the wardrobe door for her.
Hmmm, been a good day.Flymarkeeteer: £168 and counting0
