has anyone on here used moulds? ive just got some and im finding that when i try to get the shape out, the sugarpaste is cracking and breaking, advice anyone?

I've got a rose one that i've used a few times, I dust the inside with icing sugar, make sure the sugarpaste is really soft and then pop it back out quite quickly, it should still be really soft then and shouldn't crack. :) xx

Yeah i have a few moulds and found that there is a bit of knack to it. As hayley said, just make sure the sugarpaste is really soft and that the mould is well dusted with icing sugar.

esmer - Lovely cake! Looks very neat. :)

    Hi Everyone,

I hope you don't mind me joining this wonderful thread. I cannot believe that I have never come across this thread, when I have been on here for a few years lol.

I love baking and love cupcakes and novelty cakes but have never had the confidence in believing I could do good. I am currently out of work but fingers crossed something will come up soon but would love to be able to bake part time from home, for a bit of extra income.

I have purchased several books but maybe its just me, they seem so hard. Especially kids birthday cakes.

Just a few questions of oyu don't mind helping me please. I have read through up until page 16 of this thread, took a while lol and I will try and get through the rest when ever I have sleepless nights.

-When you say line the cake tin, do you grease the cake tin first then put grease proof paper? When I have tried to use grease proof paper, it looks odd.

-Can you only buy gum trag from baking shops? I live in South London and haven't really seen any baking shops around where I am.

-I have tried piping but can never get it right, I have the 1m star nozzle.

-When making buttercream, can you use the stork butter used for baking or does it have to be unsalted butter?

-Is sugar paste the same thing as ready to roll icing?

Sorry for all the questions, I hope you don't mind.

I use Wilton Bake Release then line with baking paper, not grease proof paper.

Thing you can only buy it from baking shops or online.

-I have tried piping but can never get it right, I have the 1m star nozzle.

What kind of piping bags do you use? I find the plastic disposable ones much better than paper. I think it's a case of practice makes perfect with piping, I used to be really bad but I think i'm ok now. There are lots of youtube vidoes showing you how to do it.

-When making buttercream, can you use the stork butter used for baking or does it have to be unsalted butter?

I use both, stork and unsalted butter. I find good quality butter tastes better than the cheap stuff but guess that's a personal preference thing. I fiddled around with my recipe until I was happy with it.

-Is sugar paste the same thing as ready to roll icing?

Sugarpaste is the same as ready to roll icing, regalice, fondant...sure it's got other names too, it used to confuse me to death, why does it have to have so many names!! :rotfl:

Sorry for all the questions, I hope you don't mind.

Don't mind questions at all and welcome to the thread :)

I think most of us started making them for friends and family then just went from there. Apart from getting your food hygiene cert (around £30 online) the start up costs are very low so it's worth giving it a go, start a page on facebook, mention it to everybody you know and then word will spread and you'll be swamped :D

Thanks Hayley. That's really helpful of you to answer my questions.
What is Wilton Bake Release? My son loves baking too, his nearly 9 and I think it would be great trying to practise with him when home. He has asked me to make him a Alien Spaceship birthday cake for his birthday so will give it a try.

Can you tell me what this means please?
    2 litre (4 pint/10cup) ovenproof bowl-Does this mean a cake tin lol?

I have a stainless steel type icing/piping gadget lol, think I got it from Lidl as I couldn't find any other piping stuff. I did have the material bag but that split some how.

Also do supermarkets sell colouring paste or is that the same as food colouring lol?

Its so confusing, thanks for clearing up the sugar paste lol, do you prefer to buy that ready made or do you make it yourself? Thanks :)

I don't use this but I think it's used instead of having to grease and line your tins. Just type in google to have a look;)

Colouring paste is different to the food colouring you buy in bottles at the supermarket which is not suitable. You can buy the paste online.

I prefer ready made, too much like hard work to make my own:D

Sorry didn't mean to but in but I think Hayley is off line.

Stardrops, i know i said this at the time but i love your teapot cake, i was wondering, are the spout and handle made from sugarpaste only or any tylo added? i might make this cake for my mum in april, did you use a pyrex glass bowl & did you grease & line it first? Karen x

    Hi Karen

The spout and handle are made from sugar paste with a good few pinches of tylo added. They were then left to dry for a couple of days. I also pushed cocktail sticks in the base of the spout and both ends of the handle for extra support when joined to the teapot. The first set I made were too big and heavy so I had to make another more slimline spout and handle;) I also made sure the handle would rest on the cake board for extra support. The spout was supported with a tin of soup overnight while it glued to the teapot:D Yes I did use a glass pyrex bowl and greased it first but didn't line it.
I really enjoyed making this cake and found it fairly easy to do compared to some of the other cakes I've made. I would definitely do one again;)
