    Christmas cake finally finished.

BEAUTIFUL!!! How is the tree standing up, is it fixed to the cake or just iced on? And what is it made of, just icing?

I bow down before you! :D
  • I have ordered the Hummingbird book as suggested, can't wait for it to arrive! I am going to make some cupcakes as gifts to go with the hampers I have made.

Can I ask who do I need to contact in order to bake/sell cupcakes??? I would love to be able to do this.

    Fab makes by the way

aww thanks, the tree is made from pastillage and is held on with royal icing. the presents are made from sugarpaste and ive used royal icing to hold them in place too.

  • OK so I'm planning my batch of brother's birthday/christmas cupcakes, and I have an idea I want to try out but am confused about what type of icing I should use.

I'm going to do a buttercream frosting, but I want to try little decorations on top of that, so I think they should be fondant/sugarpaste? The supermarket has fondant icing sugar, should I get that instead of using the regular icing sugar? (or is regular fine and I just need to mix it differently?)

You need sugarpaste to make the decorations. You can make fondant icing. It's on another post, egg whites and icing sugar. Someone cant get the right fondant where they are just now. It's in the same category as this post. If you can't find it, let me know and I will search hth

    Hi all.

I know most everyone is concentrating on Christmas at the moment, but I have just been asked to make a birthday cake for a 40th in January.

The cake will be at a fancy dress party which has a 1970's theme.
The birthday girl likes labradors, netball, and is a computer geek. She has recently been made redundant and is using the payout to set up her own IT business.
She's not bothered about whether it is a cake or cupcakes, and just said "maybe a netball theme" for the cake... so anyone have any ideas?

I know I could make a round cake and decorate it like a netball, but since I don't play I don't really know much about netball. Is there anything else iconic I could make which is netball related?

    Cheers!

    Ness

PS - was netball big in the 1970's? Could I maybe think about doing a netball court with lots of players all dressed in 70's outfits??

You can buy boxes of sugarpaste from most supermarkets, it's around £2.50 for 1kg from Sainsburys. I make everything else from scratch apart from sugarpaste, find it a lot easier and cheaper just to buy it.

i too use sugarpaste from the supermarket to make my cake toppers.

hayley after xmas we are going to be making our own sugarpaste at college, my tutor assures me its much much cheaper to make it than buy it, we will see !
