Thankyou, the frill was a bit of a cover up and wasn't planned;) While I was covering the cake the fondant stretched a bit which meant you could see the dark edge of the cake underneath:eek: So I cut a strip of fondant and just rolled a cocktail stick along the edge to make it frilly then attached it to the cake:D

Random question...how do you get bright white buttercream?

I made cupcakes with white buttercream yesterday using both wilton white white and americolour bright white and allthough the buttercream came out lighter than normal it still wasnt white.

    Any tips or ideas? xx

    Hi Butterfly
I am also studying cake decorating (hoping to run my own business eventually too :)). The only way that I know to make a brilliant white buttercream is to use Trex (hard vegetable fat). Just use it in place of butter and does the same job!

Hi, I like everyone else new on here have been following this for a while. I was hoping to get some advice from those of you who run a cake making business from home. Is it easy to sort out the tax part of things? Do you have to fill in a tax return form every year? And do you make much money from doing cakes from home? This is the part thats been putting me off getting up and running really.

Hope you can help and by the way all of your cakes are amazing. I had my first attempt of rose swirl buttercream tonight and i am really happy with the results, especially for a 1st try.

    Hi again

Sorry didn't see this when you posted it a while ago:o I'm registered with the tax man and I just fill in a tax return online at the end of January. I've only done one so far but I found it really straight forward and it maybe took me an hour at most. Just keep hold of all your receipts and try to keep good records. As far as making any money I think it just depends how hard you work at it really and to make sure you are charging enough or your time and effort;)
