I Googled 'telling HMRC about becoming self-empoyed' today, you will find a link to their website.

Im also employed but had to tell them about me also becoming a self empoyed cake baker. You just need to fill in an online form with your NI number and they will contact you reference your self assessment. Hope this helps xx

That's hugely helpful! Thank you so much for your help!

Well I now have in my possession wilton 2d nozzle and 1m nozzle, iced some cupcakes last night with Bettie Crocker choc fudge icing, very rich and not my taste but cakes look good. Also got some tappits for letters, daisy cutter and rolling pin. Also got some disposable icing bags. Not had much time lately to get excited about it all but hoping to get some cakes done over easter weekend and get some pics up soon. What is best fondant icing to buy, I currently have some tesco own ready to roll, just wondering what everyone else uses??

    babyrut - re: icing
I found the Tesco one (and most of the other supermarket available ones) far too sticky , personally I use M+B
http://www.mbsc.co.uk/sugarpaste.html because it is Vegan and so are a lot of my customers . It is softer than the commercial Regal Ice which I have bought from here http://www.cake-stuff.com/ as it was the cheapest and they also do reasonably priced boards , boxes and equipment.
    HTH
    :D

BTW - I am not connected to either site in any way , other than being a satisfied customer

    Hi folks,

I've been lurking on this thread for a bit and have read most of it, but it is getting quite lengthy!
I was hoping for some advice please. I have been mulling over the idea of setting myself up a small business baking but am very nervous about it! Anyhow today I bit the bullet and went to my local counrty market. I was amazed at the crowd of people waiting for the market to open, and within half an hour it looked like the locusts had been. I had a good look at what was selling and was really quite surprised. There were tables full of sponge cakes and cup cakes albeit that they were not the best that I had seen, and they were the last items to sell (even though they seemed so cheap ie 4 cupcakes, decorated with mini eggs for £1.20 in a proper paper box). So I am think that I will need to change tack if I am going to sell anything. The population of the town is very elderly, so I had a thought about maybe making some old fashioned sweets like fudge or peppermint creams. Or maybe some old fashioned puddings like spotted !!!!!! or jam roly poly in individual portions?
I have joined the Country market and bought some packaging from them. I need to pass my health & hygene cert before they will allow me to sell. Does anyone know of any offers at the moment? I've had a quick look on google and seems to be £25 + VAT. Thats alot of fudge!

I keep popping in and out again-I'm trying to spend less time on the pc talking about doing tuff and actually doing stuff.

But I wanted some input if I may please?DH bought me an edible image printer for chrimble and I've obviously been doing my own stuff on it.But Im thinking of listing on ebay or elsewhere.Given how many other listings there are for the same thing Ive been wondering at the feasability of it?Do any of you use edible images? And if so where do you get them and what price range are you comfortable paying?

Thanks Karen,I'm still trying to work out cost per sheet in terms of ink-considering 5 cartridges costs near £40...but in terms of the icing sheet and envelopes I think I'd be looking at the same rough price.

Would you mind telling me how it was packaged please? And what postage was used? I know of someone who does them packaged in a ziploc bac inside one of those hard backed envelopes and she charges £8.00.So Im curious to see how much of that was actually cost and how much was profit?

it was on A4 shinny card inside a clear ziploc bag and posted in a hardbacked envelope and sent 1st class. sounds similar to the person charging £8, i found it on ebay. i have a FB friend who sells them she charges £4 regardless of how many on a A4 page, eg. 1 x 8" or 12 x small round pics, if you know what i mean...... lol
