No one seems to have factored in the costs of parking or road tolls either?
Well, I don't/won't pay for parking, and there are no toll roads around here:)

I very rarely pay for parking and only pay road tolls if I cross the severn bridge.

    Good point though!

    Insurance - £400 a year (ish) / £7.69 a month / £1.09 a week / 15p a day
    LPG & Petrol - £400a year / £7.69 a month / £1.09 a week / 15p a day
    Road Tax - £200 a year / £16.66 a month / £4.16 a week / £0.59 a day
    MOT - £70 a year / £5.83 a month / £1.34 a week / 19p a day
    Servicing/Parts etc - allowed £300 a year / £25 a month / £6.25 a week / £0.89 a day
AA (included in insurance through Tesco)

All in all, works out about £2.00 a day. Pretty good for a 5 series BMW touring (OK, so it's a '95 and has probably done 90% of it's depreciation, but it does all I need it to do, it's great fun to drive, even if it is only a 1.8i and I LOVE IT!!) Parking/toll costs - free parking at work, rarely go anywhere else where I need to pay to park.

Dont do much mileage and this is a rough guess

    2000 Ford Focus 1.6

    Road tax £160 I think
Annual MOT £58 Passed this month without any work needed
Petrol around £30 a month mainly used for around town
    Annual service £100
extras oil, screen cleaner, polish etc etc £30 per year
    Insurance-£180 tops

Car runs around 30mpg around town even though I dont thrash it about

No parking costs as rarely park in town as its not far from us. No tolls
  • Well done on this initiative JustKeepSwimming: most people I know only look at the cost of petrol when comparing the cost of making a journey by car versus public transport.

For those who haven't kept records of all their car-related costs for the year the AA have produced a quick reference guide which uses national average costs:

Road tax- £116 for 6 months
    Tyres- £750 for 4 every 6 months

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you've miscalculated on both your Fuel and Insurance - you need to add an extra 95p per day for each - bringing your total up to about £3.90 per day.

Oh no, I've just realised I forgot to add my loan payments into mine haha! Oh well.

Anyway, for those who have an iPhone, this might be pretty useful - an app called Road Trip - you input your fuel and how much it cost etc, your mileage and it tells you on average miles per gallon etc - it's good for dummies like me who don't know how to work it out!

    1971 Morris Minor

    £0 Tax
    £10 Insurance
    £4 MOT

    1994 Rover 114GTA
    £28 Insurance
    £4 MOT
    £10 Tax

So before using any of the cars they cost me £56 a month - £14 of that being the minor. I spend approx £20 a week on fuel so that works out at £85 a month

Assuming general maintainance of about £10 a month too...

    Total monthly cost approx £151.00

So that works out at about £5.03 a day for both cars :D
