There are a number of possible reasons - 1950s houses were often not very well made, so yours may have minor defects that contribute to the damp problem.
For example, the damp proof membranes that are supposed to stop your walls and floors from sucking up groundwater may not have been properly installed. Another common problem is that mortar gets dropped down the cavity within cavity walls, and creates a bridge for damp to travel from external to inner wall.
However, unless you have a major problem of that type, the dehumidifier should be able to extract water quicker than it gets in, so the amount extracted ~should~ steadily reduce over the next few weeks. If it doesn't, it may be worth getting a surveyor in to inspect the property and see if they can pinpoint the main source(s).0 -
I'm not sure....if you are referring to me. There are 7 of us living in this house and we all breathe! I can't have cavity insulation because my cavities are too big (nothing to do with my teeth!). I don't yet have double glazing and so the windows run however I'm about to so it's a bit of a concern where this humidity is going to go. At the moment the problem is one of comfort and feeling warm.
I'm also curious why your neighbour doesn't have your problems.Do they often have their windows open?
Hermetically sealed houses create problems... many high- rise houses in the 60s had enormous problems and thankfully most are demolished. Ventilation is important however, if you open windows and have the dehumidifier on all you are doing is attempting to dry the world, so it's one or the other.0 -
Thanks for your comments. The good news is there is alot less condensation this morning!! There is hardly any frost outside this morning and it doesnt feel so cold so thats probably got something to do with it. I have not been in sons room yet- his is usually the worse - the room has a window each end and its about 10ft square, the window without a radiator underneath it is the worse. It just feels so much better to get up to a dryer house! let hope its the dehumidifier working and not just the outside temperature.
My neigbours hardly ever open their windows! I expect they think I am always trying to spy on them as I always look at their windows when I walk by. I must get in there soon and have a proper look round! Also know that they turn the heating off at night.0
