I was on here a few weeks back wanting to start to making jewellery and ive got a selection of beads and tools etc :) so im all set to go. One thing I wanted to ask you lovely people is how do you decide which beads will look good together and how do you decide which order to put them on? Also i made a bracelet over the weekend but realised i needed to include more beads which meant i needed to take them all off and add some more in, how do you avoid having to do this? xx

I use a bead board, something like this, lay the beads out and see what you have and you can mess about with the placement as much as you like before you commit to placing them.
Hi all - potential jewellery newbie here (I'm usually found on the card-making thread). I fell in love with Crafty JuJu's memory bracelet when we met at the NEC, and would love to have a go at making some myself.
You know what comes next... questions! ;)
Kandipandi - can I ask where you get the vintage looking chains as on the butterfly necklace above? My friend gave me some broken jewellery, and I have the exact same butterfly. Also, when you have the glass hearts dangling from bracelets, how do you attach them? They look like they have some kind of stopper/bead at the bottom?

TIA for the help, and if I ever make anything I'll be sure to share the pics. :)

The vintage looking chains are from various places, old chains from charity shops, my old stash and lengths of chain bought from bead suppliers, Jillybeads, Totally Beads and Rosarama Beads.

The glass hearts are added to a headpin with a small sead bead at the bottom, the seed bead is purely asthetic, the bead would stay on the headpin without it I just think it looks better that way.
The headpin is then bent over and a loop is made (with round nose pliers) which is how it is attached to the chain.

Have a look on youtube for making loops in headpins.

    I've been Money Tipped!
me again! ive just taken apart an old necklace and the fastenings which were used seemed like a good idea but I dont know what they were called! If i describe them (dont laugh!) can anyone possibly give me a clue as to where to find them or what theyre called!

The wire had this "piece" on the end then there was a crimp and the "piece" was folded over to cover the crimp and the two hooped ends joined where there was then a neclace fastening on the end?? I know what i mean sorry if you dont lol thanks for any guesses!! xx
    :p
  • Really need to get back into this! Only made memory wire bracelets but had loads asking for earrings and necklaces but dont know where to start! Need to have a sit down with youtube I think.

Does anyone have a magazine or website that they recommend?

    Loving all the creations xxx

Calotte or clam shell, you can get them either side folding, or they fold from the bottom (where the wire goes in)

Hi JAILHOUSEBABE welcome to the jewellery thread, only been here a couple of weeks myself. I have been on the card making thread but cant keep up, I think I`m upto post 2466, when I catch up I`ll probably say something, it goes so fast though but you all had a great time at the NEC by the look of it.

New Leaf I`m signing up to do some classes at Beadazzle so I`ll probably see you there sometime. I cant make up my mind which to do though and I`ve been 3 times

I did the Beginners workshop, Lisa was very helpful and patient. I'm going again next month to do the monthly project, which is a 1930's style beaded necklace. There are a few of the 'Stay & Makes' I wouldn't mind doing too, but I need to space them out otherwise I'll be spending too much money.
Let me know when you are going so I can look out for you :)

Bit miffed :( Spent what seems like all morning trying to make a button bracelet with one of my swatch watch straps and I don't like it at all............even OH pulled a face..............not sure whether it might be that I'm running out of pretty colour buttons............it just looks a bit too drab...............so, back to the drawing board I think;)
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

I love Beads & Beyond Magazine, see here , I bought the latest one today in hobbycraft but have seen it my local newsagent too, its about £3.99 or so and comes out monthly. There are lots of lovely bits and its not all make your own glass beads and findings yourself (i'm nowhere near that level yet!!) . There are lots of advertisers in the back for supplies too which I find useful. Give it a go.

ahh, Mary - its awful when that happens, but thats how we learn! Have hunt around the bottom of the wardrobe for an old cardigan that you never wear you find some more birght buttons (I raid mum's many wardrobes and charity shops for kids bright buttons!).
