hi spottybutterfly! bravo on the day trip - lunch with family can be a bit of a task for anyone so you did really well! :T.
could you post the link to the acid free wallets you are wondering about? as you asked, i'll go over what i would recomend for ultimate preservation. please feel free to ask anything or to tell me off for going overboard!! i just can't help myself. oh, and my threads at home are stored in a M&S biscuit tin, and my fabrics in an old leather suitcase or a curver box! so i sadly dont practice what i preach!:rotfl:
i'm a museum professional, working in collections care and access, and work with acid free products and monitored and controlled environments to ensure the preservation of cloth and photographs in particular. i normally recommend a brand called Secol who sell a type of acid free inert plastic wallets in all sizes, aimed at photo preservation. some have holes punched in them for storage in a binder. or you can add your own holes. http://www.secol.co.uk/POCKETS.SHTML , or here are different types from a very reputable distributor: http://preservationequipment.co.uk/Store/Products/Archival-Storage/Polyester-Pockets/Archival-Polyester--Pockets they might be worth a lookise?
Secol do sell acid free lables, but they are pricy. http://www.secol.co.uk/LABELS.SHTML Instead, i usually recomend getting a good quality permanent fine marker to label the packet directly - as all stickers will eventually drop off! http://preservationequipment.co.uk/Store/Products/Conservation-Materials/Packing-Materials/Polyester-Film-Marking-Pens at 1.59 these are fine, though the following are my preferred pen at 2.15: http://preservationequipment.co.uk/Store/Products/Conservation-Materials/Packing-Materials/Millennium-Pens
and whilst we're at it, if you're talking preservation, it would be a nice idea to store fabric and completed items flat and unfolded in a nice poofy wrapping of acid free tissue: http://preservationequipment.co.uk/Store/Products/Conservation-Materials/Paper-$4-Board/Unbuffered-Acid-Free-Tissue-Paper and then perhaps in a nice acid free, 100% cellulose, ph neutral box: http://preservationequipment.co.uk/Store/Products/Archival-Storage/Boxes/Archival-Clamshell-Boxes
That's the whole whammy, though i must say that for fabrics and threads, the biggest worry is sunlight (LUX and UV damage), and infestation. Museums protect against bugs pretty much in the same ways we would, and use light radiation blocking agents to protect art on display - the most cost effecient method is a type of sticky back plastic to attach to the inside of windows to block the damaging radiation. i'd love to do this at home to protect my soft furnishings ect! The other worries are damp and speedily changing temperature and humidity - so no keeping your stash in the garage, shed or a lovely sunny conservatory ladies!!ok, so i've gone overboard i know, but i'm passionate about my job. and Spottybutterfly did ask!!

Thanks for your reply spiral, i'll check out the links after this post
Well the ones i was thinking of were these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360229182873&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_2657wt_1059 which state they are acid free, but i am now wondering weather to choose these cheeper ones- but they also look thinner as well as not stating they are acid free- but they do say archival safe http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/20-SLEEVES-STORING-AND-DISPLAYING-TRADE-CARDS-/260587742400?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Collectables_TradingCards_RL&hash=item3cac3d64c0#ht_559wt_1165 .
I was considering a way round the sticker issue is just to write the numbers on paper and put a leaf with the numbers on infront of each pocket- but then again i would probably need acid free paper if i wanted to do it all properly.0 -

I am back from my trip away - I know it was only a couple of days but we crammed so much in - went to Alton Towers, visited my friend in Mansfield, went into Nottingham (ate at Hubbys fave restrauant), and then home.
Enough of that, here is what you have been waiting for - the golden earth update - now onto week 8.
Kind wishes to all
sweetcarer
PS I did some OU a few years ago - got my certificate in Maths - I got it paid for as I was hubbys full time carer and got carers allowance - do you not get help if you are on any benefit? In Scotland we have learn direct and we can apply for upto £200 towards a course.
Glad to hear you had a good time away. Your really coming on with her now, well done.spottybutterfly wrote: »Got no stitching at all done today. Basically im sorting a list of 100 skeins to buy and fabric and planning on buying the lapframe so may/ june will be a expensive sewing month for me. Its looking like a total of over £100, not very mse at all.
