Crafting for Christmas 2010, lets begin again......

We've run out of bread in the shops near us so we've had crumpets and par baked rolls for the first time in ages. Yum. I whipped up a stew from the oddest ingredients in my cupboard last night as we were getting low and didn't want to risk driving to Tesco - it was gorgeous. We forget what basics we can live on don't we? Warmed the remainder up for lunch this afternoon.:staradminHuuuuuuge thank you hugs to all posters:staradmin0

Isn't it just. Usually I can't be kept in during the day especially as I'm on maternity leave so I like to get out and about with the baby if I can. But it's making me stay in and actually DO some crafting! I've almost finished my mini-bear I posted about earlier on. I only have the head left and then I can sew it all together!!!
As for food, we're quite lucky as we've got a Lidl literally out the top of the road so we've been able to go out on foot and grab bits & pieces from there; they don't have some things, but it's ok for general bits to tie you over.
Happy crafting!0 -
Just dragged the dd's out for a walk in the snow but they whinged the whole way. We are now settled warmly in the front room - they are in a den made of blankets!
My scarf is growing so fast - it's lovely to havre all this time to craft and not feel guilty about it
I'm very inspired by all your lovely blogs, I think I might have a go at setting one up this afternoon.
Take care all, Sally xxx:snow_laug HM Christmas 2010

Sorry to hear about the machine, Liesa. You could try googling the machine make and model and see if anyone has had a similar problem and what they did about it. Also, I hesitate to ask, but are you sure you are putting the bobbin in the right way round? Please don't take this the wrong way - it's the sort of thing I do from time to time; well quite frequently really - I think my life is becoming one long senior moment!!!
:embarasse:embarasse:embarasse
I'm also intrigued about the ghosts you are wanting to make. Are you planning on going haunting?????:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
do you know what I WISH I had been silly and put it in wrong, but the actual mechanism that holds the bobbin is broken, it has come away from the housing. I now can't find the original power supply(it never worked from the moment I bought it but I just lived with that) so I think I shall be looking for a new one elsewhere.
Oh my ghosts are just scraps of material often from baby grows that I make into pacman ghost shapes and put two big googly teddy eyes on. They sell quite well to the goths lol

Oh dear - it does sound as though you may need to get a new machine. Have you thought about looking at second hand machines? Sometimes a machine dealer will sell refurbished sewing machines quite reasonably and you get a good quality machine at a reasonable price. You also get the follow up support that can be quite useful.
I think you're going to have to post a picture of your ghosts. It's the only way my curiosity will be satisfied!!!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Liesa, I'd love to see your goth creations too please!
I've had quite a productive afternoon - my Next directories were delivered the other day and I kept the boxes with a view to doing something crafty with them. I opened them carefully so they made magazine holders (i.e. just tore along the dotted line as instructed by Next!) and now I've covered them with wallpaper, inside and out, to match some other organisers I made over Christmas. They look very smart in my kitchen holding all my unread magazines.
Just need to read all the magazines now, which have been sitting about for months because I've been too busy crafting to read them.....0 -
susan946 - i`m killing myself laughing at you post ghosts....are you going haunting...nice 1
Well i got the hang of cast on, knit and purl, cast off, all in 3 days from "knitting for dummies" its so hard when you use both hands to write and do everything my left hand always arguing with my right hand.
I knit about 50 stitches 10 rows, got the idea increase, decrease, garter stitch, stocking ette , learnt to read patters, i am determined.
And them i got a pattern out, it was a different lauguage...worked it all out , then we had cast on 21 st, fine so far, then it said K1, P1, K1, P1.
Boy was i confused, i couldnt remember the stitch i just made, i couldnt remember which hand was the lead, i dont know where i am.....aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggggggggg
Is there a easier way to remember if your knitting or purling.

Susan - you seem to be gretting the hang of this knitting lark.
As far as telling whether you have to knit or purl the next stitch - this is easier with 'ordinary' yarn. Knobbly or eyelash (furry) yarns can be much more difficult. Have a look at the stitch you have just knitted. If there is a smooth 'v' below the needle that was a knit stitch and you need to purl the next one. Conversely, if there is a horizontal ridge just below the needle then it was a purl stitch and you need to knit the next one. Now I'm not sure that is a very clear description but experiment with a knit stitch, and see what it looks like. The yarn will come from behind the needle. Look carefully at a purl stitch and notice how that looks. The yarn will come from the front of the needle. You'll soon get to recognise what you've just done and know where to go from there.
Now you're probably more confused than you were before!!!!It's so hard to put this into words! If you want you can pm me and I'll have a look and see if I can find any clear illustration I can send you.

Ta
It all depends... I have borrowed a few books from the library and just scanned some of the patterns into my PC for use at a later stage.
With magazines I am quite selective these days as they tend to regurgitate the same stuff, so with the cardmaking ones I only get if I'm in it or if there's a decent free gift. Likewise, I only get knitting ones if there's a toy pattern I like.0
