Has anyone done any decoupage? Is it as tricky as it looks and what supplies would I need? I'm making a games compendium/quiz box for my Dad's Christmas pressie and am on the look out for a solid cardboard or wooden box and would like to decorate it.
Any advice?0 -

Pots of gold sound interesting - how do you make them?I do have a tendency to talk about utter nonsense at the weirdest of times :rotfl:Happily Crafting away in my Fortress of Solitude (Bedroom)

There are tonnes of ways to do them. Some people use jars and some people use bowls. Basically the general idea is to fill them with choc gold coins, sweets with a gold wrapper (usually Werthers Originals are best or you could use toffees) and people also usually include a lottery ticket or scratchcard. There are a few poems around as well that you add.
I did these a few days before Christmas - they weren't as good as I would have liked as they were all a bit last minute. The jars were 3 for £1 from Poundland, and the contents were choc coins, wethers sweets and a rolled up scratchcard. My SIL loved them so much she wants me to make her some as end-of-term presents for her pupils next year (obviously without the scartchcards!). I also did snowman poop jars!
He's the snowman poop & pots of gold showing the fronts and backs and lids:0 -

I'm assuming from the fact you are doing a box that you don't want to do 3d decoupage using sticky tabs. silcone glue, but flat decoupage (sorry don't know the technical term). You can use any box that fits your needs (or alternatively try making a box using old boxes/card). The finish doesn't need to be perfect as you are going to cover the box with paints, paper, varnish and glue. Find the images you'd like to decoupage (postage stamps, cut up mags, photos - you get the idea), cut them out and keep to one side. Paint the box using acrylic paint or better still spray paint it. Glue your images onto the box as desired (you can use PVA glue as it dries clear and hard or alternatively you can buy special decoupage glue (but I think it's quiet pricey)). Use a brayer (rubber roller) to smooth the images out (if you don't have one of these, use a bristle paint brush to brush it smooth) . Then brush more glue over the surface. Allow to dry. If it still looks like pieces of paper stuck on, add more layers of glue. You can also apply some metal leaf to add to depth and texture. Once you have achieved the desired finish, you can apply a couple of coats of varnish. Try experimenting on squares of card to get an idea of your end result.
I hope this makes sense and is what you meant? If not apologies for cluttering up the thread.
So much for my crafting day!!!! The kids have been off of school and I seem to have had half the neighbourhoods kids traipsing in and out of my house - result - one wet filthy house - grrrrrr!
Also, my Bigshot and another order for some crafty bits hasn't arrived as they are stuck at Gatwick. Looks like they could be there for some time as the local forecast is for more snow.
Off to try and do some crafting now. Not sure what, but will update once I produce something.0 -
Thanks! I am currently getting excited because we have just started weaning our baby and I am eyeing up the little jars to keep for crafts. I might have a go making the Pots of Love while I am confined to the house this week with the weather the way it is....0

Hi all, I've been reading this thread for the past couple of nights and would like to join if that's ok?
I have been lurking on here for some time and think that you have some fantastic ideas! I have made a few things in the past - Snowman Soup, felt bags and also enjoy making jewellery.
I'm really hoping to make everyone at least one homemade present for Christmas this year so am getting started early!

Hello Kate!
Welcome to the nicest thread on the internet hehehehe :j
I have decided to buy a little diary that lists all the things I want to do and also dates for birthdays and presents I intend to get for them.
I want to make at least half of my presents from home this year for both birthdays and Christmas.
Once again welcome :T:T
