  • Made a start today on my Christmas pressies for 2010: got 3 lovely wicker (washing) baskets in the 99p shop which will be the basis for hampers for my daughters and partners and my mum and dad. I know I said I wanted to make everything, but even I can't make a wicker basket for 99p!

Been out to the shops and I've come to the conclusion that it would be cheaper to buy my dad a jumper in the M&S sale: has anyone seen the price of knitting wool these days!!! It's a shame I won't be able to make him one now without spending more than I originally intended, so I'll stick with making him a scrapbook of his army photos and a new apron.

I also saw in Boots some cupcake flannels: they were white with pink binding round the edges, rolled up in a cupcake type case, with a lipbalm in the middle. They looked very effective and I nearly succumbed till I realised they were £1.75 half price, and I could probably make them a bit cheaper. Not sure that my daughters or sis in law would use a flannel either, so I'll experiment with the 25p ones from Wilkinsons for them.

Also got some brilliant little glass jars in Wilkinsons, 3 in a pack. These will be ideal for those little 'pots of gold' to go in the hampers, with a lottery ticket or scratchcard. (Tried to put a photo in but I'm not allowed to post links. Anyone know how long it will be before I can?)

All in all quite a good shopping trip. Also got some pressies for birthdays next year so that's 2 down, umpteen to go! And I didn't get any wrapping paper! (Already got about 10 rolls about the house where I overbought last year!)

I went out in the sales today and must admit i didnt buy anything. I ran out of time and then i didnt think some of the things were very good value.
I seem to have loads of wrapping paper and gift tags.

Did get 20 candy canes for £0.49 in the works, dated 2011

It's so exciting reading everyone's ideas for next year!

OK, here is the grand plan for 2010:

For my mum: a wrap knitted in Sirdar New Fizz in Garnet. She is always complaining of being cold in the winter when she is sitting in the house, so this will be nice and cosy for her. I have already bought the yarn in the Abakahn sale, it cost me £3.50 for 10 balls :D as it is discontinued, and this will be enough to knit the wrap.

For my inlaws: a hamper of homemade goodies. I already have the basket (£3 from Store 21). Not 100% what I will put in it yet, but am thinking 2 types of chutney, 2 types of jam, marmalade, vanilla fudge, chocolate fudge and shortbread. Have access to free apples, damsons, blackcurrants, tomatoes etc for making jams and chutneys.

For my daughter: a scarf knitted from Sirdar New Fizz (see above) in Carnival, which is different shades of pink. This was also bought in the Abakahn sale at the same price.

For my friend: a scarf knitted in Sirdar Funky Fur in Violet, which was also bought in the Abakahn sale at the same price.

For my two other friends: some kind of flavoured vodkas. I'm thinking that blackcurrant might be good as I can get the blackcurrants from my inlaws garden. May have to experiment (and drink the results...)

For my colleagues (there are 5) I am thinking of making either Lavender bags or Lavender Wheat bags. I have some Christmas fat quarters whcih might be big enough to use which I bought in the sales (£4.99 for 8 different designs). Anyone know where is the best/cheapest place to buy Lavender Wheat?

For the children's teachers and classroom assistants: bags of chocolate fudge and vanilla fudge. I have bought some Christmas cello bags in the Lakeland sale for this purpose.

I also plan to make cards and crackers.

    Can't wait to start now!

  • Thanks whoopidoo, I'll keep my eye out, although I'm not a very fast knitter and I don't like sewing up, so I might give that idea a miss this year!

And phia2000, I got £35 of Hobbycraft vouchers for Christmas so I'll have to mosey along there sometime this week and see what they've got. Haven't been brave enough to go there yet as there is a Next, a Currys and a big Boots in the same retail park and parking will be horrendous!
