I know all this, and I know I should have read it properly and I've only myself to blame for being stupid, you don't all need to keep reminding me
Just wondered if there was any way out of it - as I said, I only read the 1st class bit, not the bit in the next box saying GBP 25, which I'd have recognised better if it had said £25. I've reported it as excessive postage, so will see what happens, as they're clearly in breach of ebay's policy (in quotes, above).
Thanks for all the replies, it is appreciated, even those who have reminded me how naiive I am!0 -
Perhaps you could email the seller and be honest and say that you no longer want the item. If he/she says they still want you to pay you are likely to get a strike and negative feedback. Would this matter much to you? Have you received any strikes for non-payment before?
Personally I wouldn't even pay 99p for that necklace, it looks cheap.-->♥<-- Sugar Coated Owl -->♥<--

Woohoo! I'm normal! Gotta go tell the cat.0 -
Tell him that GBP means GB pence, and as that is much nearer what it actually would cost to post, that is what you assumed, what indeed can be the only sensible interpretation.
He should either use the standard method of writing £25 or enumerate exactly what he means.0 -
The seller offers a return policy. You could email him/her and save them from even posting it or even refunding you because you no longer want it.-->♥<-- Sugar Coated Owl -->♥<--

Don't pay him, neg him straight away, then report him to ebay after doing that pop down to your local newsagent and put a pound coin in the machine outside and you will come away with something just as useful and of equal quality.
No contract has been formed as this type of listing is not allowed by ebay, ebay WILL act because its THEM this seller is trying to rob not you.
Anyone who says this method of selling is acceptable or justifiable has broccolli for brains!
To say people list in this manner to compete with eastern/western/chinese/flynese or even cocknese is really missing the plot £25 sale + £5 postage = £30, £5 sale + £25 postage = £30 no edge for either vendor the only benefit for the shyster is fee avoidance and no risk of refund, why bother sending the item just pay the £5 sale fee and pocket the postage! You could make an absolute bundle,
Dear sir I was very sorry to hear your package didn't arrive please find enclosed your £5 sale refund unfortunatley I do not refund postage {I have also enclosed a free magnifying glass to enable you to read my auction t&c's} nice doing busines with you bye for now hope you learned a lesson sucker!

Cheers for that Ben (and everyone else), you've cheered me up a bit, cos I've felt like a right muppet over this! The neg would matter to me, cos I'm quite proud of my 100% over 137 transactions and several years. Only wanted a cheap necklace to go with a fancy dress costume, not into pearls at all, and the rest of the costume's going to cost me a few bob into the bargain (going to the Discworld convention as Sybil Ramkin, for anyone interested, and into Pratchett)0

See you there, I'll be with a pirate and probably a couple of highwaymen but haven't got my own costume yet.
If you decide not to bother with your pearls and take the neg let me know by pm as I have some that look similar and can bring them with me so you can borrow them.

Ooh - when and where is the Discworld convention? I make a brilliant Nanny Ogg.The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0
