Just to clarify, where does making your own clothes fit into this? Part of my plan to cut down on spending is to start making, thinking more time spent at home on the sewing machine less time pounding the high street! But do I need to "declare" money spent on fabric and pattterns? Still possible, as I'm hoping to raid my grandma's store of fabulous vintage fabrics that she never got around to using, but puts a different spin on things.
I don't count it - simply put it's more expensive to buy fabric and make than it is to buy a finished garment, and I wouldn't be able to design anything new if I counted the money and would have to give up a hobby, which I don't feel is the aim of this challenge!Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

I have my first spend of the year to declare, bought some lovely treats yesterday. Got a fab stripey dress and pink polka dot top with the rest of my Next vouchers so no spend there, also a long navy cardi with heart shaped buttons
£14 after vouchers, some patent black pumps £8 after vouchers and two necklaces £4 for both in a sale.
Grand total now £26 spent, £74 left and all stuff I had thought about and planned to buy (apart from the jewellery), so very pleased.Barclaycard [STRIKE]£7,296.35[/STRIKE] £6134.99 - MBNA [STRIKE]£4,182.88[/STRIKE] £3267.08 - O/draft [STRIKE]£569.31[/STRIKE] £413.59 - Capital One [STRIKE]£1477.55[/STRIKE] £1451.44Total debt [STRIKE]£12048.54[/STRIKE] £11267.10 6% paid0 -
Hi everyone,
Naughty spending to declare - £16
but it did get me quite a lot - 2 cotton tops for summer, one black, one white, a purple jersey dress and a versatile black dress for interviews/smart events. I'm hoping the cost per wear will be good. I will try to make some of it back - got about 20 things listed on ebay today (free day today!).
Hugs xx:money:0 -

Hi everyone,
seems like a very low spend weekend all round :A. Happy New Clothes & very bargainous ones too.
I am rather proud of myself for resisting the lure of the Faith 20% off sale; there I was thinking that I needed some new flattish black shoes for work & guess what I found in one of the shoe boxes in my room ... exactly what I needed
welcome to oldskoolretro :hello:will add you to the membership list right away,
Have a good week everyone & beware of shopkeepers with sale signs0 -

shame as I needed some new work trousers!
I'm really craving a good shopping spree, but going to resist! Need some new glasses which will be expensive  but more important than clothes! The sewing part isn't too hard for hems. Firstly find cotton which is a good match to the item you're sewing.
Then, working with the trousers inside out and the hem pinned up start by securing the thread at one end. Don't use a knot, instead do several tiny stitches all on top of each other. Then start by sewing a stitch through the turned up fabric (not the outside fabric that you will see when wearing trousers) - make this stitch close to the top of the folded bit. Then the next stitch is a small stitch in the outside fabric. The next do another stitch in the folded bit - these can be bigger stitches as they will not show on the outside. Continue this all the way round.
Because the only strain on this hem will be the weight of the fabric you don't need to do lots of stitches and it doesn't have to be super-strong.
If you are turning up jeans, you can just run around the whole thing with a sewing machine, the jeans I'm wearing now aren't hemmed properly, have been turned up and then a solid line of stitching round.
I tried to find some pictures to link to but all the 'how-to' guides I found just had descriptions!
I hope this is clear enough, really hard to explain something in words which is so straightforward in reality!!!

Hiya,
Just thought I'd check in to give an update.
I still haven't done any spends so far, I am soooo proud of myself.
I had a friends birthday bash over the weekend and in the past I would ALWAYS go out and find something new to wear, be it a new top, necklace, belt etc!!!
I did wander round the shops but I thought about having to put it on my total here and it stopped my shopping urges! I would never have coped before joining this forum.MFW 2012 #145 - Overpayments - £0.00/£20000 -
