well done on making the first step of wanting to get it sorted Frugal (lol that sounds like you've joined AA!). I'd echo what others have said - I've tried American flylady.net but our thread on here (job lists on p1) is much better :D

Well done on making a start, Frugal.

I hope today is just as productive for you :)

I made my own start on 'to-do's' yesterday. I don't have the energy to get much done, but plan to sort out the kitchen cupboards over the next few days. I agree with whoever said little and often, but also understand why you want to get things sorted before your children get back.

I would definitely say tackle the cereal on the floor. I'm having a mouse problem at the moment and it isn't nice, so removing stuff that could encourage them is definitely a must do.

I found posting my to-do list on the OS daily has helped and hopefully, by posting what you need to do on here, it will help you too.

Good luck with it all :)

  • Well Done Frugal... I wish you every success in sorting out your house... I suggest lots of black bin liners and anything you even think could be recycled - pop it in a black bin liner and forget about it! Freecycle or give to charity shops... We are all guilty of owning more than we need and I am no different but I have got into the habit of pruning the house every couple of months... and now that I am part of the No Spend Day brigade, there does seem to be a lot less clutter! ;-)

Good Luck and keep going... a clean tidy house means you love being at home and having friends and family over! (giggle - again a good way to save money!)
Well lets see - I dip in and out of MSE all the time but I still come back - have done since 2007!!!

    Frugal >>> :grouphug:

I am sending you hugs and love because heaven knows I feel your frustration!!!!

The flylady thing sound fab, I will have to check that out myself as I have no answers, I end up in the same boat as you quite a lot.

I too find that once I've let things slip for a day or two - esp with having sproglets - it seems impossible to get the house back in to order, the feeling of complete helplessness kicks in and then even the prozac seems useless. I just get panicky and fed up over it and yet do nothing about it. Then days pass, the mess builds up, then I just can't cope with it. Then thnigs hit rock bottom, and that is a place that's difficult to bounce back from innit :(

Harness that bit of enthusiasm and excitement you have about getting sorted, and as everyone else says, just do a bit at a time. Bin bags ROCK for that. I know it's not strictly o/s, but when my washing gets too out of control I tend to stick it all in baskets (or bin bags), and wash everything I can find that isn't in a drawer or cupboard :o I know that's a terrible waste of electricity etc, but starting at square one works better for me than trying to sort it out halfway through. Then I get it tumble dried (sorry folks!) and put away all in one day if I can. And then promise myself I'll wash every other day instead. That is a massive job and I feel I've achieved something when I've put the washing away. Then reward yourself. Whether it be a huge pat on the back, a gin, a bar of chocolate, half an huor on MSE...come on here and tell us so we can cheer you on! If your house is anything like mine, that's 80% of the mess sorted with the washing outta the way!!!

As everyone else says, don't put pressure on yourself. You are certainly not the only one to feel like this, a lot of us do. I have a friend whose house is immaculate (and quite boring I have to say, lol!) and I always compare myself to them.

My counsellor made a direct comparison with my mind and my house - it made me feel slightly better about it. When my house is a complete tip, so is my head. When I can't cope with the house, I can't cope with anything. My house is busy because I have a busy head, I am a meandering river rather than a stream! And I pick up a lot of flotsam and jetsam on my travels, lol.

Anyway. I tend to shift the washing from the bedrooms, chuck everything on the bed and then vacuum. That in itself make sthe place look better, and sort of gets me in the mood to start looking through the stuff on the bed and be ruthless with it. Which you could maybe try while the washer is going? Get some music on while you're dong it, that perks things up :T

The most important thing to remember is that you need to look after yourself. Stop beating yourself up. Bu-gger the two day target, just do what you feel you can. And keep coming on here to tell us how you're getting on. I always find the support from fellow MSE-ers is enough to get me inspired to get up and get cracking.

I hope that you still have that spark and keep in touch!!!

    Love from Lucy xxxxx

It was a start - After making the decision to do something about it, I have started. In just half an hour I did all that. Then I have 2 days to get it ship shape, which I WILL. And after that I can follow the Flylady thread to maintain it.

I was not suggesting that half an hour a day is enough to conquer it, or maintain it - I only made the decision to fix the problem tonight.

    :(

I wasn't trying to knock you down.

I just didn't want you to set yourself up for a fall.

But if you allow an hour a day or a day a week you can have a clutter free, clean & tidy home.
Then you WILL feel heaps better.
  • Well done on your progress Frugal

Don;t worry about those who try and knock your progress  My house is fine, but as we live here, it;s never going to be perfect (and who wants that, anyway :D ) Now that I've been following the Flylady thread for several months, it takes me no more than a couple of hours a week to keep on top of it :T

I'll add this to the current Flylady thread later, as that's where you'll get help to keep on top of it all :j
