To iPhone or not to iPhone

  • If you need to do any of these then i would suggest that you go for a HTC phone (android not windows mobile)
    Why?

OP, There are many (often cheaper) alternatives to the iPhone (e.g. HTC Touch HD 2). Many manufacturers are closing the gap between the iPhone and their product, so regardless of your choice, you know you are getting the very latest in mobile smartphone technology if you go with any of the biggest players in the market.

I would have loved an Iphone, but couldn't justify the cost. I got a nokia 5800 on contract, and am very happy with it.

There aren't so many apps as for the Iphone, but this seems to be improving, and I've downloaded some good free apps recently. I play music on mine, games, and use the internet a lot.

Since getting this, there have been so many other phones, that I will probably upgrade to a different one. I like the look of the N900.

Apparently O2 online are out of stock for the iphone on that deal...strange!! Will investigate other phones, I guess the iphone is proven to work okay, I hate buggy phones that have good spec but rarely work well. I have a N95 with route 66 maps and have been really pleased with it apart from the small keypad.

I have the Samsung Omnia and I must say that I HATE it! Stupid thing crashes all the time, doesn't take calls, GPS doesn't work most of the time...

I am going to move to an IPhone i think, but the only limitation I can see is that it doesn't have a radio - which I use every day. About the only thing on the Omnia that is reliable though.

OH has a HTC TouchPro 2, and LOVES it! If you like using a keyboard rather than the touchscreen the keyboard on that is excellent. It is larger than most other keyboards, and the screen does this little flip up thing that somehow makes it much easier to use.

One other thing, I suspect part of the problem with my Omnia is that Vodafone have branded it themselves, and basically put their own software on it. This seemed to lose a lot of functionality, and makes it much more buggy and unreliable. They released one upgrade, but then gave up. If you go to Samsung and get their proper updates then you invalidate the warranty.

So, if you get a smartphone, I think if you get it from somewhere like phones4u, or carwphonewarehouse, then they give you a 'pure' phone, rather than one that the network have ruined!

This is one of the biggest bugbears I have about Vodafone - why do they do that?!

Apart from functionality it looks absolutely dreadful - all red and grey with no colours whatsoever!

At the end of the day it all depends on what you want the phone for. Me, call, text, facebook & twitter was all I required (I use a camera to take pictures)

To that end I went with a T-Mobile Pulse, yes I know not the greatest out there before you all start badgering me but it "Calls" great, it "Texts" great and the offical Andriod app for Facebokk works a treat as does the "Seemic" app for "Twitter".

As I say it's not the all singin dancing greatest mobile but it does the job just fine for me and waaaaayyyy cheaper then an IPhone
Do I Need It ? .......... Do I Want It? .......... What Will Happen If I Don't Buy It? .......... I'm So Confused I Need Help!

agreed agreed agreed! The lack of functionality is the biggest issue though. I was reading online all these happy Omnia owners around the world, and then a whole bunch of very annoyed Vodafone customers!

when I got it originally it had a great autoanswer 'feature'. So it would just automatically answer the phone, and you wouldn't realise that the person could hear your life going on. Annoying to say the least.
