Might be best to wait and see if Vodafone are going to offer it, and what their tariff prices might be.

No such luck with Vodafone undercutting....

Consumers hoping that Vodafone would substantially undercut O2 will be disappointed, however.
People signing up to Vodafone's £40 per month, 18-month contract also have to pay £89 for the iPhone itself, meaning they will have spent £809 on the phone and monthly payments by the time their 18-month contract expires.

This compares with £713.82 on a similar deal with O2 and £712.98 with Orange.

Thinking about it further, can't you get a Macbook Pro 13" for around the £700-800 mark? Makes you think about how expensive these smartphones are getting.

My conclusion is, lovely though the apps are, this gadget is too fragile/bulky for everyday outdoor use attached to a belt clip (good for a handbag though). So I am sticking to trusty old Nokia n78 for now.
Fragile I will agree with. I still wished they made the 3GS out of metal like they did with the first iPhone. But bulky? Unless I'm mistaken, the iPhone is almost 5mm thinner than the N78 and it isn't much different in height and width either.

If you want a contract - Tesco mobile ==> ~£250 upfront then just £20 a month for 12 months which is about the £440 price on PAYG + you get 12 months of calls and texts
This would depend on your usage. The Tesco tariff equates to 300 mins OR 600 texts or a combination of both. I believe calls are 20p per min on Tesco and for someone who would use 600 mins per month on O2, their Tesco bill would have an extra £60 on top, resulting in it being £45 dearer per month before we even go into text messaging. My numbers may be off because I have used prices based on what they were in the past, but I just wanted to point out the decision on tariff isn't as simple as you make it out to be. If a low user, then I agree Tesco will fit the bill. I must admit my own post regarding Orange did not take usage into consideration.

Good enough reason to not even consider an Iphone!

Agree entirely. I would love an iPhone but the overall cost is just way too much, even on a 24 month contract for a basic iPhone you still have to pay up front for the handset!

I've always championed smartphones in the past, specifically Windows Mobile phones. I currently have a Samsung Omnia and I love it. There's also the newer Omnia 2 out. For HTC I think I'd recommend the Touch HD2, although haven't had a chance to play with one yet..

BUT if it's a touch screen device you're looking for, then it has to be the iPhone. my Wife has one (I suggested she try one and she loved it) and I have to say, as much as it pains me to say it, they are fantastic phones. The number of apps available plus the well designed multi touch interface make it very good.

While I love my Windows phones, they're currently more designed for stylii than fingers and thumbs. It suits my needs though, which is why I've stuck with them so far. There are apps I use which aren't available on the iPhone. It really depends on what you want it to do.
The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

  • I myself have an iPhone (1st Gen) and for me it is the best phone i have ever had, people's main reaction is "its only got a 2MB camera" "you cant send MMS" "it aint got bluetooth" or "ya cant record videos", i believe that the 3GS can bluetooth and record videos, however lets say that it cannot. If you need to do any of these then i would suggest that you go for a HTC phone (android not windows mobile) as you will only be fustrated, however MMS can easily be solved by emailing people!

However if you do not wish do any of these then i would recommend that you go for a iPhone. It does have its limitations, that you can only buy from the App store, that it has not got expandable memory, however it does have its benefits. It has the iPod and a direct link to the App Store and iTunes. Safari is easily the best mobile browser (IMO), plus it has the app store!

However it is ultimately your choice.

  • The HTC HD2 which is available now and is fabulous! So many people want this phone there is a bit of a wait with some providers but well worth it.

Google it, there are lots of comparisons with iphone, and it beats it regularly.

This is just my personal experience as I'm not a cone head when it comes to phones.

My last 2 phones were HTC (can't remember which models) and they were crap.

I now have an iphone 3gs and if the earphone socket were slightly wider I would make love to it. It's great. ;)
