To iPhone or not to iPhone

I'm in the market for a smartphone and would be grateful for any advice on the following
1. What are the best smartphones on the market. I'm told that the iPhone is not the best out there. I'm looking for something that is fast, can browse the internet without getting frustrated. Being able to type quickly is key. I used to have a Blackberry with qwerty keyboard and it was great.

2. Are any coming out in the near future that are worth waiting for?

3. Is now the best time to take out a 18/24 month contract? Is it worth waiting till Jan/Feb for better contract prices?

4. Any recommendations where to get the best deals? Are there any tricks to getting a better deal i.e. can you get a cheap contract for an entry level smartphone and then buy your own and use that?

5. Anyone know what the best contract is for 600 mins and 200 texts?

Thanks for your help.

QUICK get a recommendation in for a smartphone before the Apple fanboys turn up!!

I will have to research smartphones before recommending one but heres one vote for a non Apple product.

I can hear the Apple Youth Brigade feet marching to this thread already.

I'm considering a HTC Hero for my next phone. Looks pretty good.

Alternatively there's the snappily named Samsung i8910 HD

Or how about the Motorola Milestone (aka Droid)?

Then there's the various models of Blackberry.

I have to admit though the iPhone is pretty good now they've added the features that were missing from the original.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

I would go for an iPhone. It's pretty hard to beat with the sheer number of apps available for it. It has an excellent browser and email client, and playing music on it isn't bad either. There's also no shortage of accessories available for it.

Might be best to wait and see if Vodafone are going to offer it, and what their tariff prices might be.

If you decide to get an iPhone before midnight tonight, buy through http://www.topcashback.co.uk/ on Orange. They are offering £150 cashback. I should say really, it's for any Orange contract phone, not just the iPhone. So if you do find one on Orange which you like before midnight tonight (/cause that's when it expires), there's £150 off for you.

A cheap way to sample iPhone type delights is to get an iPod Touch and use it thru WiFi. Cheapish and no big tariffs. My conclusion is, lovely though the apps are, this gadget is too fragile/bulky for everyday outdoor use attached to a belt clip (good for a handbag though). So I am sticking to trusty old Nokia n78 for now.

Don't! If you want a contract - Tesco mobile ==> ~£250 upfront then just £20 a month for 12 months which is about the £440 price on PAYG + you get 12 months of calls and texts

If you can id wait until next year as apparently theres some other phones out next year, the htc hero looks good and im keeping tabs on phones released by htc
  • HTC's 2010 line up looks very good, although they're potentially six to eight months away from being available on the high street.
