With the cold hindsight of the inbetween time, that dead period in between Boxing Day, and New Year, perhaps the manager is feeling the cold dread of being exposed as a muppet, for costing the company time and money in a pointless investigation of a drink induced incident. I hope so anyway.
  • I'm with you there, my company is on shutdown until Jan 4th, won't hear anything for a while, I just hope the silliness of this situation hits someone dealing with this before then.

Also, my job has no real cover, only my line manager has the capability of dealing with some of my workload, but that requires him to focus on nothing but covering my job, so all the meetings he attends, university on a wednesday afternoon (essentially everything he does) will all have to stop until they find/train a replacement for me.
Is taking a key member of the business out out of action really a sensible response to some drunken allegations?

    Really hope they see sense.

I'm sure we will continue to be allowed only the OP's opinion.

I'm willing to be £200 his post about how indispensible he is contains a lot of utter crap. As robredz said if he was so good they wouldnt be after him:rolleyes:

And there's bound to be people in the wings hungry for a promotion...

Anyway - this whole thread shows the value of 'playing the game' and 'dressing for the job you want, not the job you have'...image is key in jobs and if the cap fits, then sometimes you end up wearing it.

I absolutely 100% disagree with this. My Husband was working for a company a year or 2 ago. He went in for just an "end of production line" job. They saw how good he was and promoted him so he would be learning in every sector then running a part of the factory himself after training which was supposed to take 3 months. They taught him some things then he was stuck on one of the production line for a bit too long and they kept trying to get him to do overtime every day which obviously is not possible or convenient. He made a lot of money for this place which included sorting and shipping out a lot of old stock in a big room by himself, each part was worth hundreds. Yet the HR woman took a dislike to my Husband and went over everyones heads to get him sacked even though he did nothing wrong. The guys he was working with/for and those that he had to answer to were unaware until the decision had already been made. She offered him a production line job at minimum wage knowing full well he would be stupid to take it. They had a few meetings afterwards to try and come up with a solution but he didnt trust them so left.
My point is, not every person is in the wrong, sometimes it can just be because a certain person took a dislike to you. Thats not your fault, its theirs. You can work as hard as you like but if someone takes a dislike to you it can be hell.

  • Even if you were taking drugs, or any employee for that matter, unless you were seen taking them at work, or they can prove you were stoned (not sure if that is the technical term if you are taking cocaine) surely the employer can't do anything, and certainly can't suspend you.

Yeah, you were drunk at the Christmas party and the manager probably decided to take advantage of that, but the fact that you can remember exactly what he said surely shows that you weren't as drunk as you think!

I would try and get employment legal advice, preferably a free half hour consultation, they will tell you exactly where you stand and hopefully nip this in the butt before it gets any more serious.

What utter trivel. In my company, i am the only person that can do my job, fact, that's because i've made it my job and no one else really knows what i do. Parts of the job could be given to other people, but the whole job can only be done by me so bits wouldn't be done satisfactorily and the office would end up in a mess very quickly.

It's called the "Art of making oneself Indispensible" it can be a double edged sword however and can be problematic come holiday time though.

Someone once said to me that the cemetry is full of indipensable people....

Best wishes to the OP, you come across as very diplomatic and hard-working, I hope that manager loses his reputation over this if he had a good one to start with.
I was in a similar position years ago, but I couldn't prove my innocence and ended up being made redundant. I didn't have a clue what to do and felt quite bullied by the whole matter.
