For any action for defamation (slander or lible) to be successful it has to be in respect of a statement made to a another person that lowers the opinion of third (or group) in the eyes of a right thinking person.
There are various defences, principally, justification, i.e. it is correct, fair comment, privilidge (e.g. court proceedings). Quite apart from what may have been unwise words about the OPs colleagues they are unlikely to attract action in the courts, whether they are actionable or not the cost makes them out of the range of most people.
However the original subject of the thread is an entirely different matter. It was an official business function and the OP was threatened with official sanction by a superior employee. If he were to bring action he would be not only able to sue the manager concerned but the company itself. Again not only for defamation but, should he lose his job, constructive dismissal.
All the talk about drug tests etc is irrelevant. It is not up to the OP, in these circumstances, to prove his innocence, but on the manager and employer to prove his guilt. If, after about two weeks, they have evidence, they may find themselves in a rather poor position trying to produce it now, as it is a matter they should have brought to the attention of the police immediately.0 -
On the flimsy tittle tattle evidence the manager could give, he would probably have his own collar felt by the old bill for wasting police time, mind you, one troll-like or possibly orcish contributor to this thread would have any OP bang to rights and stitched up like a kipper for merely asking advice.0

If someone had accused me of taking drugs i would have slapped them. You handled it well, hope you dont lose your job.
i think you should consider sueing the manager who decided to tell everyone you were a drug addict.£10,000 in 2010 = £00 -

To be fair; Alcohol is a drug and he was drunk at the time.0 -
That would be running the defence of justification. As it appears, from what the OP originally said, clearly the implication was that he was being accused of taking cocaine to run it, although technically true, would be seen as disingenuous and likely to at least double any damages.0

Aye I know - I was responding to the person who said they would slap someone who accused them of being on drugs; which they technically were as they were drunk. If you catch my drift.0 -
Although I have been supportive of the OP I am somewhat disappointed that they did not escalate this immediately.
If someone accused me of drug taking, publicly, I would be doing all in my power to clear my name ASAP.
Whatever it took.
I would not be hanging around for the company to sort things out.
And I would not hit anyone who accused me, more likely laugh. We all evolve - get on with it0 -
The whole thing is farcical. The company haven't got a leg to stand on.0
