I have read news reports on the web last night about all the panic buying that is going on at the moment, have to say apart from bread I can't really say I have seen any of that here.

It also went on to say that because of the veg being frozen in the ground at the moment, price hicks in the later part of the winter may be unavoidable. Which means that a lot of people will be looking at the reduced stuff and I may have a bit of competition....
Someone kindly donated a sad looking cabbage my way yesterday, so I will fry that up with garlic and black pepper tonight and have it with some Roast potatoes.
Tomorrow I Really must use up the baby corn and snap peas that I have they have a date of 6/1 but they still look fine, not sure about freezing them though. Don't think the peas would SNAP if you know what I mean.

When we read that, we were relieved that we already had so much food in the house from carefully planned, gradual stock piling we've been doing.

You could parch the snap peas in boiling water then freeze them? I don't actually know if you can freeze them or not, but if you could, then I would get that would be the way. Although snap peas and baby corn would be perfect for a stir fry (mmmm baby corn...)
  • I always said that a man that buys a girl a quilting book is a man worth keepin' ;)

You may just have a point there :D Although he kept me mighty busy with HIS HUGE garden all year. His thinking is that as I am English I know ALL about English gardens/plants :o what I know can be put on the back of a postage stamp
I got it looking neat but thats about it :A He just watched, took the odd photo, and sunbathed . But to be fair he did also take me to a couple of beer festivals in Germany to make up for it. Not that I needed re-paying, he just hates traveling alone.

  • Well the panic buying does not seem to evident here as yet.

    I managed to get.
    Mushrooms......................25p/1.00
    Tomatoes.........................25p/1.00
    3 red peppers..................25p/1.00
    Bread..............................20p/1/25
    juice................................50p/2.00 Got 3 of them.
Also some bean wrap things that the boys can take to school for lunch tomorrow, they were 35p and were supposed to be 2.40 (who on earth buys those?)

So tomorrow I will add the mushrooms and peppers to the peas/sweetcorn and have a stir fry I think I have a black bean sauce somewhere lurcking in the cupboard.

  • You two are really BAD influences on me. ;)

I am considering cancelling my box scheme and making the family go whoopsie hunting on a regular basis.

Funny - I could have sworn there was more than one person here? :p

  • Ha Ha I will take the blame and wear the badge with honor ! It really is good fun,

The weather here has turned bad again, we had nothing short of a blizzard yesterday and we have woken up to about another 6 inches this morning, it was just starting to melt as well. No worries I have a lot in. In fact the stores are looking more than healthy still not using alot,
Yesterday just had salad with the avocado, savoring every mouthful as I don't know when I will get another.

To day we are going to have bulgar wheat and spinach bake thing, with stuffed red peppers, rather a ritzy meal for midweek and no one visiting, but I'm sure we will cope !

  • hey, how's the snow this morning? Really hope it's not too bad for you.

What is bulgar wheat and spinach bake? it sounds delicious!

Did you say before that you like mango as well? It's just that I saw on aldi's website that mango is one of their super 6 this week, it's going for 39p each.
  • OK I am not good at this, but will try,

    2 cups bulgar wheat
    water (like cous cous amount)
    red pepper
    onion
    olive oil
    dried mint
    cayenne pepper
chop the onion and pepper fry add the bulgar, water, cayanne, bring to the boil, then put the lid on turn off the heat and ignore for an hour.
Then get half a bag of spinach,
    mushrooms
    pine nuts
    onion and garlic
    some plain yogart
    ground allspice.
fry all this together, till the mushrooms are cooked, oh not the yagart. put that in at the end.
stir the bulgar wheat and put half in a dish then put in the spinach mix. then the rest of the bulgar on top, put it in the oven covered for about 30 mins gas mark 4 then take the lid off ant put more pine nut on the top and leave it for another 10 mins,
Really good the next day if you have left overs.
