Parsnip and lentil soup (optional carrots) is really good too. I make it a lot with stock, cumin, black pepper and a pinch of cinnamon then whizz it up.

Another take on pink_numbers' idea is that I roast them in the oven. Put them on a roasting tray, drizzle with olive oil and herbes de provence in a hot oven for about 20 mins or so.

    They both sound yum!!

I went to do the weekly shop today ( for me, employer and small child) and by chance Tesco had LOADS of whoopsies!! The only fresh item I bought full price was bananas, everything else was reduced. As an added bonus, the reductionsmade preprepard veg cheaper than unprepared, so my work will be easier too - woo hoo:j. Planning a nice curry for tomorrow - cook veg first as child won't eat curry, the mix in an economy sauce (yes, I know, but at 4p what can I say???:o) Soy milk (Alpro Light) was also on offer. All in all a good, economical shop.

I Vatic, you know this place where I live is really strange, now don't get me wrong I mean it in the nicest way.
But foodwise they all seem to be well "old fashioned" is the only way I can describe it.
When I first got this house my brother in laws brother took me shopping for my first big shop, later he said to my sister "I hope your sister never invites me round for dinner, she only seems to eat weird food" He had only taken me to Mr Ts, so not really sure what that was about. I think his eyes would pop out if he saw a delivery after I had shopped at the online Asian shop that >I love so much
so spinach is really easy to get hold of.
Ttha salad that I bought yesterday, a "contmpory mix red romain, baby spiach, tat soi, rocket, and mizuna, with a chilli mango dressing. Ha no wonder there was about 15 packs still sitting there, anything more than a iceburg lettuce would be classed as exotic in this town!
Heck even the mango juice, get walked past.
After being in the Bay Area for so long where Asian food is almost hard to escape, I find it the hardest to find here. Must admit though if I was to find a nice Avocado I would buy that at almost any price. And to think when I lived in San Jose for a while I had to bin a ton every year so that we did not get rats in the yard.

Not much to report from yesterday, just a couple of pack of crumpets reduced down to 25p from 85p

we ate the mixed winter veg yesterday as a kind of stew, with roast potatoes, i know that sounds nasty but it tasted good.

Like you say Faithcecelia when looking at whoopsies ready prepared are easier to find as people rightly resent paying over the odds for CONvenience foods.

It varies, up to a week (brussels, broccoli possibly). From experience, if I plan to just make soup but don't have the time I bung them in the freezer raw then boil them up at another time, this doesn't work so well if I want to eat them whole, in that case they would need to be blanched but I tend to be too lazy:o
  • Hi SanFran :hello:

We've been doing this for over a year with meat and it's totally possible to do :) Although harder for us on veg, we'd never eat any if we relied on woopsies! Our local Mr T's has hardly any veggies on cheaply and seems to have loads of those plastic boxes of fruit (normally mango) which are bad value regardless of a 50% reduction.

Be carefull not to buy duplicates if you're freezing otherwise you might end up like us and have over 40 posh sausages waiting for the saturday morning to come.

Otherwise I've subscribed as this is great! You're also one of my first subscriptions :D

:hello:Ow thank you PatchCabbage I really am touched!
Also thank you Pink-Numbers you saved me a question :T.
today I got some mince pies for 10p/50p and some danone yogurts that were 20/1.69 but I dropped them off for my sister as she will use them, and I pass her house on the way home.

    For my household I got

MORE of the snap peas and sweetcorn...........20/1.69 got two.
also some strawberries for .............................30/2.00 I would never have paid full price for these there are about 12 in the carton for 2 quid. Got two of these as well, with a bit of cereal in the morning my boys would have wolfed down one tray without thinking.
So total for today for me was 1.00
I could have got half hundred weight of bread as well, but didn't need any. trying to make some room in the freezer, so that I have more room for veggies, so that I DO NOT have to have to cauliflower anything five nights on the trot, but at the same time not have to leave them there either.

  • I have just sat and worked out a few of the the down sides to this challenge;
    1) Cannot meal plan.
    2) Out in nasty sub zero temperatures slipping and skidding all over the place.
    3) Double edged sword as to wether you have a NSD
    4) Can you tell I'm not in a good mood?

The shelves were bare! I guess people are just using the small shops right now as they cannot get to the big shops and nor are they delivering right now, but geesh this place grinds to a halt every time there is a bit of snow?

  • I was thinking about this today regarding the snow. My guess is that you will get LOADS of woopsies just after a snow, where people stayed in and didn't buy anything from the shops, so they would have lots of unsold stuff for woopsies?

I guess the not being able to meal plan is outweighed by the amount of money you are saving. Most people do meal plan to save money, but my guess is that the saving is no where near being able to get food for as cheaply as you are getting.

I can see how not being able to have NSD is a bit more depressing, but again, you have to look at how much you are saving! Have you been filling out that spreadsheet? How much have you saved so far this year?
