Yep I'm with nickmack on this one. The speed at which your modem sync's is different from your actual download speed. And you are paying for an "upto 8Mbps" service.

I sync at 8Mbps. To download at that speed is theoretically possible if you have the perfect setup. Most people will find they get around 2-6Mbps download speeds (which is roughly what I get depending on time of day etc...)

Add into the equation contention ratio's, line quality, time of day, bandwidth throttling etc... makes it difficult to compare one persons connection with another.

As mentioned before, there are still problems with MaxDsl, and all ISP's seem to be getting affected by this.

BIG difference between 2MB and 6MB. If I was paying for 6MB and only getting 2MB I'd be very angry....

If you get 4MB during peak times then I would be happier, but 2MB from a 6MB service is not on!

The thing it your not paying for a 6mb connection your paying for an MAXadsl connection which offers speeds upto 8mbps the only thing they guarentee is a minimum of 512kbps.

There are just too many factors to take in to account when it comes to the speed so every thing is just about guess work based on a few items like line length, exchange quality ect.
they measuer the round trip to the exchange and then the noise on the line in db up to 60db will give you a 1mb connection 45db will give you a 2mb connection the noise increases the greater the distance you are from the exchange.
it can even be affected by dirty contacts in the socket in the house so plug things in and out a few times and it can remove dirt and grime from the contacts.

aaaah, think I got wrong end of the stick.

The OP never mentioned MaxDSL service so I presumed they have ADSL. Sorry about the confusion I may have added.

2** Availability of 8Mb download speed is subject to local availability, distance from exchange and line test. If your line won't support up to 8Mb we'll offer the best speed available on your line.

That is taken from the BY/Yahoo website, but I find that statement very vague and misleading.

If your line won't support up to 8Mb we'll offer the best speed available on your line - So does this mean BT/Yahoo will inform you of the best speed available on your line? Or do you have to just guess?

    Hi
When I first went on MAX, my router was syncing at 4mbs with my old telephone extension plugged into my NTE5 master socket. Not good enough I thought....

So I bought a cat5 cable, rj11 both ends, and changed my NTE5 backplate to an adsl backplate, so now no filters needed, and this has increased my synch by 2-2.5mbs.

My router now syncs at 6-6.5mbs, and now my download speed is between 4-5mbs, which I'm very happy with.

So yes, with ADSLMAX I'd say, you have to take everything into account, not just your possible speeds, but also your own internal wiring/router etc. as this really helped me to receive and maintain a higher synch and a better speed.

And touch wood, at the moment, alls well

Have any of you raised your RWIN (RcvWindow) value from it's default. XP is normally set to 17520. I had to increase mine after my speed upgrade as I wasn't getting anything more than 2.1Mb. I'm now getting, on average, over 6Mb.

I copied from explanation to save me having to type it..... Default RWIN for broadband, is like having a tiny straw in a thick milk shake, only so much can get through the straw (line), so fast. By putting a larger straw (higher RWIN) in that same thick shake, you allow more shake (data) to come through faster, to a point that is. After which, there is no more improvement, and shake (data) can start spilling all over (packet loss). So the key is, to find an RWIN that fits your line just right.

If any of you are interested in trying this, I'll post some instructions tomorrow. Too late tonite.

This sounds good. Hope you post instrcutions. :T

    Hi
Go to http://www.dslreports.com/tools and do the "Tweak Test" from here this is what I choose
DSL, 8000, XP, PPPOA and hit Recommend, this will give you, your recomended RWIN setting, go for the lowest number it recommends.

If you need to change your RWIN, go to http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp download and install Dr TCP from here you can change your RWIN setting, click Save and reboot your pc.

    Hope this helps

Well as you deleted these links four minutes after posting them, most of us will never know!

Why would you be worried about posting links? Links to what?

    :D
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:
