Windows Not Genuine! Oh yes it is!!!

I had automatic updates clicked and on 6/7 the WGA notification was downloaded. I've done a system restore to get rid of it.
I've changed my setting to download but not install and it's back again, but I can't seem work out how to make sure it is not installed again.
I don't know why it keeps trying to download as I have a genuine license that has been validated.0 -
I've just sussed it out by choosing custom install rather than express install.
What happens now, as it was downloaded but not installed, will it disappear when I re-start my computer?0 -
I don't understand why there is a problem with the WGA.
I built a new PC yesterday, new mobo + processor, new clear ATX case, 400 w PSU, added an extra cd drive also.
All other components, ddr ram, 2 x DvD drives, HD and super cool gigabyte fan all from previous windows system (now brown bread), which is Windows XP SP2 retail.
So I boot to safe mode, remove old mobo drivers, reboot install new mobo drivers, reboot.
Then off course I get the message about activation, I just call the number explain the new activation needed, get new code and all done.
So I cannot understand why people need to bypass WGA if they have a genuine version of windows (a legit key).
So someone explain what the deal is as I am finding a lot of things I have read in this thread disturbing and the lengths people are going to, using the 'devils key', bypassing WGA, using pirated goods etc...
I can understand the WGA problems if they have moved O.E.M. windows to another PC or trying to use the same key on other PC's.
So again enlighten me!
/Edit... I did read that over 1,000,000 PC's built by some companies do use a pirated windows key, have you found out you were duped?0 -
I have a genuine license and am getting updates, I just don't see why I should have the notification on my computer, if MS has validated it as genuine.0

Please dont offer to fix my PC :rotfl: :rotfl:

No, I'm not.
One is perfectly within their legal rights to transfer a licence from a PC no longer in use to another e.g. because one has broken & or no longer in use.
The point is, it was easier at the time, to purchase a copy for £5 on ebay than to go through Microsoft, & many others took this route, although they owned a licence & because this was pre WGA, genuine licences were disregaurded, rather than reactivated & now 4 years later in my case & just as a new OS is about to hit the market we get this, where as if this had been made clear in the beginning those who took short cuts but had a licence, would have gone about things differently.
Phoning home, why does this need to be done more than once? & has been likened to having your basket checked for stolen goods each time you visit the supermarket. Microsoft in many experts opinion have behaved badly over this.
I don't remember offering to fix your PC, why would I, on the other hand if someone finds themselves in the same position as I have I would be more than happy to share what I know.0 -
i got screwed by this
i downloaded SP2, removed it cos it slowed everything down but then i kpet gettin told i couldnt run or install X, Y or Z so reluctantly i downloaded it again and it killed my pc. i lost everything and was forced to restore it.
this was 3 years after buying my pc from a retail store. so was pre-installed with a genuine copy.
anyways, as i no longer had my original disc i couldnt format it myself so a friend offered to do it for me with their copy of windows that already had SP2 on it.
job done, pc fixed.
now with these activation alerts i'v been locked out of my own pc!!
i'm fuming!!
i tried to activate it but i need a product key.
i dont even have the one from my pre-installed copy let alone the one a friend installed (he's changed from win xp, to media centre to vista)0 -

NO! - If the license came with the purchase of a new PC then it can NOT be transferred to another PC - it is only licensed to that physical machine. If you bought it separately then it can be.
The vast majority of licenses come bundled with PC's and are not transferrable.0 -
it is only licensed to that physical machine.
Now you just need to define what a 'physical machine' is. My old Windows 98 PC has been replaced piece by piece and now runs XP.
So is that the same 'physical machine', or a different one? At what point, if any, did it stop being the old PC and magically become a new one?
The simple reality is that my PC is my PC and not Microsoft's, so they can sod off if they think they're going to install spyware on it. I've paid for my copy of XP, and I don't need some irritating piece of junk installed to let me know that, and I really don't like companies that treat me like a criminal.
Frankly, to me this is just another reason _not_ to buy a PC with Vista, because this kind of 'copy protection' garbage from Microsoft is only going to get worse. The odds of my next 'PC' being a Mac increase all the time.0 -

AFAIK you can transfer a retail copy of XP, but NOT an OEM one.
I have an ongoing problem as my drive and network card failed, and were changed, resulting in MS considering it an un-authorised copy.
PCW want £22 for a rescue cd they did not feel the need to supply when I bought the pc.
Seems like I should have made my own before the crash, hindsight, :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2

I've completely stopped automatic updates now. Even when it was on 'notify before update' it automatically downloaded!!"When you want something said, ask a man.
