I found the best thing to clean a bbq is beer :whistle:while the plate is still warm. Just need a spash and wipe with newspaper. I'll try the red onion though next time just to freshen up the plate before use. Bit chilly here atm for bbq's. :D

Are you talking to me Glad?

I usually clean with beer after the bbq. I don't like leaving the plate all yuck as we mighten have another bbq for a while. When it's starting to cool, DH then cleans it.

Apologies if it's not me :D

half a lemon while still hot does the same job ..... i think anything with acid content will do the trick ((White vinegar??)

  • It's true! My brother-in-law is Zimbabwean and swears by rubbing an onion across the BBQ before cooking. You have to do it once the BBQ has heated up so wearing an oven glove is a good idea! You can do it with a white onion as well as red....
  • Soak your BBQ grill in soda crystal solution for about 20 mins - it all just falls off. (Tip given to me by someone else on this board)

Yep that's what I've always used as the flames are heating up...............cut in half, stick the BBQ prong in the end and wipe up and down the grill.

when you have finished squeezing the juice from fresh lemons (for marinades, salad dressing etc), use the inner part to rub on skewers and griddles to remove excess grease... makes washing up easier and saves detergent

Wonder if this will work on my George Forman grill too as it's a nightmare to clean. I will try..

I've found the easiest way is to turn it on for 2 minutes, and use a wet kitchen blue cloth or similar to wipe all the dirt off, works very well and the cloths are 49p for 10 or a few pieces of kitchen roll

This has nothing to do with MoneySaving, but I found it interesting so thought I would bring it to you. At a family BBQ, my sister's friend who's a chef, wiped down the grill rack with a red onion. It was cut in half, with a fork in the back to hold it, and then dipped in water. Apparently this cleans the rack, reduces smoke and improves flavour. You heard it here first!

Cheers for this one - it really does work. I tried it at my brother in laws bbq on Saturday and we were all impressed (even the kids!)
