Palm Pre Any Good?
Comments

Palm has basically killed their old operating system. In contrast, 90% of DOS apps still work in Microsoft Windows platforms! Palm was struggling financially recently as their market share (PDA/Smart phones) just dwindled. They are just trying to revive with Pre.
Palm was bough t by US Robotics, then 3COM who then span out the OS Side (PalmSource or PalmOne) as a new company whilst retaining the Palm Hardware.
IIRC Palm Software side had limited rights to the OLD Palm OS they could use it but not make a lot of changes to it (so retaining compatabiity with the old existing Palm Hardware) and thats the reason they are not backwards compatable rather than a delberate choice to make them different for the sake of it.0 -
hi all
I would like to be able to keep up with emails & with Yahoo groups via a smartphone.
Can anyone recommend the best phone for this? I'm looking at the Palm Pre.
I need it to be fast & easy to navigate, not too cumbersome for typing replies. I'm moderator on some health forums & work long hours so now I either come home to a couple of hours' extra work, or cart my laptop in to use in breaks.
Hope that gives you an idea of what I'm looking for.
Any advice or opinion would be very welcome.

I've had a Pre since UK launch and find it excellent. Very good at the web and much more usable than a touchscreen for typing on. You can have multiple programs (and that includes multiple web pages) open at the same time which you may find handy. It has excellent integration with Google calendar and contacts, not 100% on Yahoo but still good (you can't delete a contact from Yahoo for example) but if it's a Yahoo email account you're talking about the email is 100%.0

I've ordered one which should arrive tomorrow. Wasn't able to try it out as the O2 internet was down, but the online demos/guides were useful. Many thanks.

Got one and the US seem to get all the updates before us, O2 are sending 'trained' people to their stores to help push it and the likes of Skype etc don't want to do any apps for it. The micro site on the phone to o2 has a folder of great apps but all it tells you is 'coming soon some great apps'
This is 2 months coming on 3 since it was on sale.0 -
Not dead but eclipsed by the iPhone and unfortunatly on 02 who whve focused on the iphone a lot.
You'd have though that after they lost the iphone exclusivity it would have been pushed more but it's not such a fashion item as the iPhone and not selling as well.
Probably like palm usually is, a great device jsut not at the right time, I suspect the next big thing will be Android based phones, rather than tied to the maker (ie Palm and Apple), but they'll have an uphill struggle to convert the fasionista's and apple fanboys who wanted iphones because it's apple.0 -
Palm, not a winner, rushed product, things missing that are on iphone, that people love, but palm are silly, saying this will all come soon, not good when you are trying to sell the product.
Iphone, is a great phone, but what I hate about apple is its all about the bottom dollar, the first iphone could have easily had all the things of the iphone 3gs, but its there way of making more money. You can see they are all about money, as all over networks have the the iphone.
Next will be nokia coming in with there big phone, its coming, then have plans with android (google) and signed a deal with intel. Forget iphone and palm pre, these are all stage 1 development into the mobile world. Nokia sell 4 out of 10 phones in the world and are the biggest manufacturer in the world. I think everyone has owned a nokia or knows someone with one. So ive got a feeling that this year, nokia are going to being out some really cool phones.
Ok, I might be a lover of nokia, but from my first nokia, many years ago to my latest phone has never failed me.
It wont take long, there is always a winner, look at HD and blu ray, that took under 6 months for a winner.
The thing I predick, smart phones, will be everything your pc does now. Open source os, thats the way to go.
Im keeping my phone, until this war is won.Kind Regards

Why. Every year there are newer and better phones out, thats just life.
Simply buy what you want now and worry about an upgrade when it comes along.0 -
