saying he's going to leave recorded delivery parcels on my doorstep... basically I have to make sure I order everything special delivery now)

Don't you find it really aggravating having to sign for everything? I'd be cheesed off if I was the one sending you parcels that weren't getting signed, but there's no way I'd pay extra just to make them come to the door for a signature.

• Our postman is forever telling me off about the number of parcels I get. He likes to tell me that I am insane to use cloth nappies on my son, woolly trousers are the most ridiculous thing he's ever heard of, etc etc etc, but he always waits whilst I rip into the packages to see what I got, he posts bigger packages through the front window if my car isn't on the drive, and he always knocks and lets me know if I have too many packages for him to carry and that they are on the 12pm van.

(The van postman just thinks I'm crazy)

Yes, they always comment, but just be cheeky back. Or make conversation whether he likes it or not. And give him a mince pie. He'll be happy then.

Seriously, he was probably having a bad day. It must be manic being a postman at Christmas, especially with the rise in internet shopping.
• my usual postman laughs at me because of the amount of parcels i have,i just tell him at least im keeping him in a job.i did tell him as i dont drive its the easiest way to shop,if there is something that needs signed for or too big for letter box he keeps it for me and brings it later in the day or early evening as he knows i cant get to the sorting office its right on the outskirt of town.
• I work for Royal Mail and posties are expressly forbidden to leave items requiring proof of delivery without collecting a signature from the address. The signature does not have to be that of the addressee. If there is no answer, then a P739 card must be completed by the postie and put through the letter box.

One of the ways my local delivery office gets around that, is to not list recorded
items when they arrive in the office. That means they never get listed on track and trace either.

RD items dont get recorded when they hit delivery offices
so they are not getting around anything
RD items are scanned in at post offices(if sent via PO) and then after delivery via card or PDA
the only exception are those added to print outs for large companys

Nope. I don't have anyway near my front door the postman can hide things and anything on the doorstep is in full view. I live in a relatively OK neigbourhood but my road is a cut through for the whole world and his wife so I would rather have to make a 10 min detour to the sorting office on my way to work than risk it sitting on the doorstep for most of the day. But I don't have a choice in the matter anymore unfortunately... One thing has gone missing so far (and obviously I have no proof it ever ended up on my doorsteps... it was some baconnaise.. lucky chav that got that) but luckily the retailer was happy to send me another.

That's good to know, but sadly it doesn't seem to stop our lazy postman. Despite the fact that I have reported on several occassions that we have a mail thief in our building, we still get recorded delivery items left carelessly in the hall or signed for by neighbours (unless they get nicked first), which horrifies me. It's gotten so bad that I have to have all my mail sent to my stepdad's business, which means an hour's round trip on foot in the cold for me every time I buy something online or have to collect a customer's postal payment for an eBay item.

Is this new? My experience comes after problems about 18 months ago with a postman who said that recorded delivery were too much hassle for him. It was the customer service centre who explained the system to me, stressing that there is no tracking until the local office.
