This reminded me of my mum's recent experience of buying something small and having the member of staff serving her say "ooohh last of the big spenders!" It embarrassed her and in my opinion, was cheeky and unnecessary. However, we both got the feeling that she was just trying to make small talk (but being crap at it) as another poster suggested in your case.

The way I see it people shouldn't really comment on these things as it's a touchy area and eventually someone in a bad mood is going to bite their head off for it and make a complaint. My postie once said "it's like Christmas every day here, all these parcels- can I come live with you?" which he meant as a joke. However if said it in an unsmiley infuriated way that suggested all my parcels were giving him a hard time, I'd have been a bit narked as I would have taken it the wrong way.

Thing is I just can't tell for sure as I don't know what your postie's body language was like when he said it. Personally I always think it's best not to comment on such things as it does embarass some people and from the sounds of your post you tried to justify your parcels- at this point the postman should have said he was joking and he didn't actually mind.

I would say if he keeps saying such things be just as cheeky back and see how he likes it ;) Or just ignore it to make it blatantly obvious you're not impressed. I'm sure if he knew he upset you he wouldn't have said it.
