front fogs work with headlights (sidelights only) but rears wont

That is beacuse the law states that only sidelights need be used when there is street lighting.

As far as I know that is still the law.

It may be an offence but I wouldn't argue with a double decker bus or a HGV. They give way to each other turning right all the time in my area.

Also one reason why some motorists give way is because they know at certain junctions it's impossible for vehicles to get out, and the council will do nothing about it until there is a nasty accident. So instead some motorists give way unfortunately some idiots give way when there is a massive queue of traffic behind them.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

    Correct;-
    Rule113"You MUST
    • ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise
    • use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified
    • use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226)
Night (the hours of darkness) is defined as the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise).

[Laws RVLR regs 3, 24, & 25, (In Scotland - RTRA 1984 sect 82 (as amended by NRSWA, para 59 of sched 8))]"

However what about bad daytime visibility where street lighting would be irrelevant?

Rule 226 from the Highway Code

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).
    [Law RVLR regs 25 & 27]

    Rule 115; -
    "You should also
use dipped headlights, or dim-dip if fitted, at night in built-up areas and in dull daytime weather, to ensure that you can be seen"

Drivers who can not be arsed to queue to go right at a roundabout so use the left hand lane and cut people up. Coming off the A130 onto the A13 is prime example, even with clear roadmarkings. I do wonder if it weren't for these people if there would be a queue at all:confused:

    Drivers who do not indicate.

    Drivers who use Mobile Phones.

Drivers who do not wear seatbelts, something which is quite common round here. Yes, by all means make yourself a human missile but just don't go firing yourself at other people.

People who do not understand safe stopping distances.

job knockeys with huge exhausts that are begging for an obstruction to be put up them;)

Fog lights when there is no fog.

Sounds a bit like my own internal rule for motorways, but in my case it's 70, 80 and 90 and works a treat for me. You shouldn't really be trundling along at 70 in the outside lane when overtaking - get some speed up and finish the overtake quickly and pull back in is my rule. People who overtake at 1mph faster drive me mad![/QUOTE]

Fully agree with you; worst of all are the idiots who tailgate you in the outside lane - you pull in to let them overtake, which they don't do and then you find yourself forced to brake because your catching up fast with another vehicle, and have nowhere to go.

Cruise control has a lot to answer for in the wrong hands............

My pet driving hate is headlights - seriously people, just SWITCH THEM ON!!! And don't get me started on sidelights (do people ever look at their own sidelights to see how ineffective they are?)!!

Yesterday, I was delivering around rural Berkshire and it was foggy and murky almost all day but I saw loads of people without lights on. I especially love the ones in silver cars. They must see the fog and think 'Hooray, this is my chance at being invisible!!'.

At one point yesterday I was driving on a stretch of A-road and three of the vehicles coming the other way flash their lights at me and warned to me to slow down. I assumed there was a problem further ahead. I was correct - 2 cars in a head on. It looked like one of them was overtaking a slower vehicle (in the fog!). The best bit was, of the 3 cars that flashed me, not 1 of them had their lights on!!

    Is it me!
    About the sidelights...

I only switch my sidelights when its gloomy outside. The reason... I can see perfectly well outside the car, as can other drivers, but i find it a little difficult reading the dials. This situation doesn't warrant having dipped lights switched on, but still allows me to see my dials properly. It also saves fuel as having lights switched on puts strain on the alternator.

    My pet hates...
    • Drivers who needlessly hog the middle/outside lanes
    • Drivers who have their front foglights on because it "looks cool" or it's lightly raining
    • Drivers who have their rear foglights when there's no visibility impairment.
    • Drivers who dangerously pull out in front of you at a junction, then insist on driving slowly
    • Drivers who don't indicate at roundabouts.
    • Drivers who park their car over lines in carparks, so you can't park next to it.
    • Tailgaters
    • Drivers of 1.0L Saxos and Corsas with massive amounts of body kit and wheels that are worth more than the car itself. For no other reason than they look like dicks.
  • People that give way to vehicles turning right and so going accross the path of oncoming traffic.

This is a road traffic offense on main roads.

I'd say the people turning right (coming out of a side road) who force their way out are even worse.

I'm not talking about people inching their way out to see if there's traffic coming from the right (as some idiot has parked on the corner so they can't see anything). I'm talking about those who drive out, irrespective of if any cars are coming from the right, stop on the road and demand that drivers coming from the left let them in - "I'm turning right and YOU WILL give way to ME and I don't give a damn about the law and this Give Way business".

I think the front ones in the cases mentioned are called "driving lights", (as opposed to fog lights).

Does it really matter if you call them fog lights, spot lights, driving lights etc. At the end of the day if you have lights on your car which you know full well may dazzle and distract other motorists (and pedestrians) and which, however unlikely, may result in someone having an accident and you still choose to switch them on purely to show off then you are an anti-social, inconsiderate moron.

Does anyone really believe that other people will be in the slightest bit impressed that their car came equipped with fog lights? Do they expect heads to turn and people to say 'amazing, I've never seen anything like that before'? If you are a fog light abuser I can assure that you may be drawing attention to yourself but maybe not the kind of attention you're craving, unless for some reason you want everyone to think you're a complete pillock.

I drive from Nottingham to Mansfield early every morning...around 15 miles. It has become a game now counting faulty and missing headlights.Never less than 14 and one morning last week a record 36.

No traffic cops any more so they know there's little chance of getting nicked.

My pet hate are drivers who don't get to the middle of the road when turning right.Instead of drivers going straight on being able to continue on the inside you finish up with a totally unnecessary traffic jam.
