Was I wrong to say thank you?

Hi

Please tell me if I'm going a bit mad here.........it was my 5 year olds birthday on Sunday and he had a party which family and friends attended.
I've always been brought up that when someone buys you a present, you send a thank you card/letter. I still do this (I'm 28).

So this week I sat with DS and wrote out little thank you cards for everyone, he wrote his name himself and did big kisses. I then posted them out.

I went over to MILs today and walked in on SIL1 and SIL2 saying "isn't X (me) a sad cow, sending thank you cards, who gives a !!!!!!??"

Am I the only person that thinks this was a bit out of order???? HAve I done something wrong?

    Oh my goodness! Poor you!

I think it's really sweet that he wrote, and I always had to as a child. I can only think that it shamed 2 rather rude people into realising they aren't very socially graced, and that you are, and the comment was a spiteful attempt to make themselves feel better.

No - I send thank yous for all presents bought - be it Christmas, birthday or anything else. As do practically every other child/parent I've ever come across (particularly for birthdays) It would be rude not to.

Stuff them. If they can't see politeness when they see it, it's not your problem.

I think it's a lovely gesture and a great thing to be teaching your little one :)

I do think it says a lot about lack of manners in the SIL's.

Had I received a thank you from a 5yr old I would have thought what lovely parents he had :)

    take no notice x

Now, it just shows their lack of manners and respect.

You did the right thing. Continue with the lovely thoughts and teaching your children your values, that's what counts. :T

I did this with mine, letter writing is becoming a lost art.

  • Hi, Sarah, you did exactly the right thing in sending the thank you notes. In my circle of friends and family everyone sends thank you notes and appreciates them. The only thing you did wrong was to invite such an ungrateful person to the birthday party.

Sarah Lou, I think that is a terrible way to speak about anybody, let alone someone who has impecible manners like you. You have done nothing wrong at all. Perhaps its making them feel guilty because they don't bother with thank you cards and they are being defensive - I don't know.

You did the right thing, its their problem not yours. And well done for raising your child to say thank you for his gifts.

  • Oh well, I've just sent out my daughters thank you's from their party, so I'm a sad cow too. At least we're sad cow's with manners ;)

Did they know that you'd heard? I'd have said something!
  • What rude, crude, mean people! You are absolutely right to encourage your child to have good manners, and say thank you.
