  • i have started this inspired by flylady, the only thing i would worry about putting in it is bank and credit card details. is it safe if the house gets broken into? although saying that, any thief would have to spend a bit of time looking for it i suppose.
"it's better than a poke in the eye with a pointy stick" - my dad, regularly throughout my childhood when I complained about something being too small/not perfect/not tasty/not what I wanted. he was right every time. :D

I think there's an old thread on here about a household manual / control journal, depending on what you call it.

I'll have a look and see if i can find it!

I wouldn't have those written down anywhere they might be easily found.

I have mine saved, along with my on-line banking details, in the password software I use. If anyone stole my laptop, they'd need to get into Windows (requires a password), then find the relevant data-file (not in a standard directory), then unencrypt the file itself.

I have a copy of the same file saved (securely) on-line too. Again, someone would have to know a lot about how it's all set up in order to access it. But for *me*, it's easy to find - and so if I needed to report a credit-card stolen, or access my bank details (or anything else in that file) from elsewhere, it would be easy and fast.

For some of these it would be a good idea to keep a copy of the info elsewhere - e.g. keep a copy of insurance info at work or with a friend/family member in case the list itself gets stolen or destroyed.

.....and then make a list of where you've left them? :D

I'm a manic lister; I write lists for everything, shopping, menu plans, camping trips, holidays, films to see, music to buy, etc. etc. My Sweetie is always finding old lists laying around and telling me off about it! For the camping trips and holidays I don't specify exactly which clothes to take, I'll just write for example '4 s/s tops', although I do note precisely which equipment to take. I keep these lists on the computer and then just print them off when needed and tick-off as I pack.

  • After reading through MSE I have come to the conclusion that many people, like myself live by lists!

I am also wanting to make this folder for my children to look at in the future to help them when they leave home.

In Old Style this is known as a Household Manual ;) There's a great thread here, which I'll merge this thread to later :D

Do your children currently help around the home (you don't say how old they are) Make sure they have lists of their own now, as it's never too young to get them helping :T

Meant to say also, from previous experience, it's a really good idea when you go on holiday, to keep a note of every credit card number and the telephone number to ring should it be lost or stolen. The number's usually printed on the card itself, but if it's already gone it's no good to you! My OH's wallet was nicked in Tallin, and it was thanks to internet access in the room that we managed to cancel all the cards so quickly. We've taken a list of numbers with us ever since then...

You may think me crazy, but I don't have any children yet.

Figured that once I have children I wont get round to making it for them so best to do it now while I have time and not have to rush.

Hopefully next year we will have at least 2 :) x
