Maestro is being pulled, and it is being replaced with Mastercard Debit.
A lot of the banks switching instead to Visa Debit from Maestro.

Only in the UK, it and V-Pay are the only SEPA compliant cards that exist which can be used across EU borders. The Maestro Card is here to stay, shops will still be taking the same as they are now starting to display the V-Pay symbol.

Unfortunately, i didn't see this thread until after i had 'activated' the new card.

I've had no problems in actual shops at all...yet...BUT online is a completely different story. I've had three or four online stores refusing to accept the card. (Fortunately, i tend to use a credit card online for puchases because of the added protection, but not everyone will be in the fortunate position of having several alternative cards to use).

    1. It is now no long possible to make a payment to a credit card company using the new debit card. As payments over a particular amount always go via BACS rather than FPS (£750 limit with CB/YB), I tend to prefer making debit card payments to my credit card especially as I tend to move money around at the last possible moment. Many people in my situation will sadly experience this issue and will be forced to use internet/telephone banking to make credit card payments.

Is that a definite? Just i usually just pay my Barclaycard via Maestro every couple of weeks (the Mastercard Debit number isn't recognised).

My issue with Clydesdale bank is the fact that ALL the information which came with the 'new' card suggested there would be no problems with the acceptance of the Mastercard debit, indeed it merely repeated the benefits of wider acceptance. It would appear they must have been well aware of the difficulties (and if the above is true they have misrepresented the true position with regards to the card's use).

Just Had another call from YB :wall:asked me if "Would going back to Maestro help" My quote was what wait 5 more business days for a new card I might get out of buying Xmas Presents altogether.
Funny thing was I got the call whilst typing on page 3 of my diatribe to Lynne Peacock I have stuck an Elastoplast over my web cam just in case :D

Sadly it is a definite. Try to pay your Barclay Card using your new MasterCard debit card and you will experience the pain yourself.

MasterCard debit is very very widely accepted. In fact acceptance is not the problem. The issues occur when you try to use your MasterCard debit card as an actual debit card in places where a credit card is treated differently to a debit card. These include paying credit cards off online (e.g. paying your credit card off with your debit card), paying for airfares, getting cashout etc.

I have absolutely no problem with MasterCard Debit cards as I know MasterCard are trying to move away from Maestro globally and consolidate on the MasterCard brand. My issue is that MasterCard and CB/YB have not been working with merchants to reprogram their equipment and website to accept these new cards as debit cards.

Overall I can't really complain about CB. They have actually been a very good bank to me and this is the first time I have had to complain. CB's biggest issue is that it is the first big bank in the UK pushing this new card which means an uphill battle which us consumers will need to face almost alone as all the other majors are switching to Visa debit cards.

But, as i said before, they knew, or ought to have known, there would be issues, and really ought to have highlighted these possible problems for customers - especially with Christmas on the horizon.
