Travelsaver – Sorry for the delay!

Thanks for your questions and apologies if you are still experiencing problems with your Debit Mastercard. To deal with your questions in order:

    1. British Airways and bmi should already recognise Debit Mastercards as debit cards rather than credit cards. Easyjet are working to update their systems, and as far as I’m aware, Ryanair levy fees for payment, regardless of whether you are paying with a debit or credit card.

    2. MBNA has informed us that they will accept Debit Mastercard payments over the phone and they are working to enable payments to be made via their website.

    3. Obviously we cannot influence the sponsorship agreement between Visa and the 2012 London Olympics. At present we are not planning to introduce Visa on any of our cards; Mastercard and Maestro will continue to be the primary payment systems that we offer. Given that it won’t only be Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank customers who will have difficulties with the Visa restriction, I’d expect the Olympics organisers to offer customers an alternative to paying with a Visa card (such as cash or cheque payment).

I hope this information is useful. We are monitoring all Debit Mastercard problems that are raised to us and continue to work with Mastercard and retailers to ensure that Debit Mastercard is accepted as a method of payment.

If customers are finding that their cards are not being accepted, we’d like to know about it so we can investigate. We can be contacted as per the details on our websites:

    Hi YB rep

Can I ask will basic bank account holders ever be getting a Mastercard Debit or will it always be Maestro, and what kind of card now and in future will come with the instant access savings account with a debit card.

    Cheers

    James

    Hi James,

We'll be continuing to offer Maestro debit cards with our Readycash current accounts for the forseeable future. We also offer Maestro card with our instant savings accounts, and again have no plans to change this at the moment.

    Hope that helps.

    To the YB rep:

I recently lost my debit (Maestro) card for my current account plus and it was replaced with a Maestro card. Having read all about this I assumed I would receive a debit Mastercard.

Can you clarify which accounts these cards are issued on? Clearly not the Basic account from what you have previously said, but are they available with Current Account Plus/Signature?

    Thanks
    Sorted out my finances...

  • Having read with interest a large number of posts on this site over the last few months about the reported issues with Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank's Debit MasterCard product, I thought it was about time to add my two pennies worth:

I've also recently been experiencing problems with my new Clydesdale Debit MasterCard card and was hoping to get some answers to a few questions I had about other people's understanding of this whole situation.

Is there anyone out there who might be able to give an insight into the following:

    * Has Clydesdale Bank (or Yorkshire Bank for that matter) actually now withdrawn its MasterCard Debit product? The reason I ask this is because they surely shouldn't be issuing more cards if the ones already in circulation don't work! No?

    * How are these banks communicating these problems to customers? The reason I ask this is because I have received absolutely no official notification from my bank and I would have thought they would want to keep me abreast of the problem. Has anyone else received any formal letter / e-mail / phone call etc.?

    * Are Clydesdale (or Yorkshire) offering another type of debit card as a temporary replacement for the MasterCard product while they fix the problem? Has anyone been offered this kind of solution? If not, can someone from these banks explain why this is not on the agenda?

Any insight or advice on any of the above points would be very gratefully received. Thanks very much.

    Fabian.

scott1358 - We've issued Debit MasterCards to our Private Current Account customers as well as to some qualifying Current Account Plus customers. Reading your post, it doesn't look like you've received a Debit MasterCard from us, however if you'd like to apply for one please speak to your local branch and they can check whether you qualify. Given some of the feedback on this forum, you may decide against applying, however I can assure you that the majority of our customers haven't had any problems with their new cards!

Fabian - We're very sorry to hear you've been having similar problems with your card to some of the other posters on this thread. Please know that we are taking the issue seriously and are working hard to fix it. I've checked with our cards team and they've told me that they’re systematically working through those remaining vendors having problems accepting the card to resolve the glitches and minimise the impact on our customers. It's important to repeat that the feedback we've received from our Debit Mastercard customers has generally been very positive and we remain fully committed to the card. However, it’s clear from your post that you’ve had a number of problems so it would be helpful if you could let us know about any specific instances of your card being rejected so that we can investigate further and find a solution. If you refer back to my post on 20-04-2010, you'll find details of how to report problems.

    Thanks.

Not sure if this will apply to many of you, but it appears as though the AUS/NZ EFTPOS network does not understand the new Clydesdale debit Mastercards.

When at a supermarket or other store in Australia or New Zealand, you can select CHQ or SAV when using a Maestro based debit card. This enables you to pay for goods as well as take cash out even with foreign cards. Unfortunately this is not possible with the debit Mastercards. Not sure if others have had similar issues when using their Clydesdale Bank cards to make payments and take cash.

The irony of course is that Clydesdale's parent bank (NAB) was one of the key architects of the AUS/NZ EFTPOS network.
  • well the problems with this new card continue!!!!!!!.
I too had trouble in the early days paying over the internet as the YB mastercard debit card was not recognised. In July it was Travelodge- although after complaining several times they gave me the £2 back. I had previously rung the YB gateway team and was told to write in (which I did on 11/7/10) to get them to refund it. I've rung to see what they did with my letter and been passed from pillar to post.Guess they just lost it. In the meantime whilst paying at Makro last week the cashier asked if I get loads of problems with the debit card as it showed on her till as a credit card and I should have been charged £1. She too had the same problems with her YB card ... and so it goes on with seemingly no resolution.

I've been told that I can get the branch to give me a new maestro card as a replacement if I want but my existing card would be immediately disabled.
Instead its forced me to think about why I pay £120 for a bank that gives me an unreliable debit card, poor service and the wonders of a "remote banking team". The onus always seems to be on me to chase the bank when they inflict these problems on me , so I'm voting with my feet and moving to a bank with a visa debit card (tried and tested) and free account. And after 25 years with yorkshire bank, its time to say goodbye, I've really had enough.
