I usually make my own roasters but ths year it's just gong to be the two of us so thought I would buy a bag of frozen roast potatoes. Which ones would you recommend, I found the Aunt Bessie's ones very dry.
Don't want to be patronizing but I have only recently started to roast my own potatoes and when they are cooled can be frozen then re-heated directly from frozen. I was a bit dubious at first when I heard from a friend that she does this all the time - but they taste exactly the same. I find it really useful when I fancy roasties but dont have time to faff about!!

Aldi's do goose fat roast potatoes as well, which they only stock at Christmas time. They are really good.

Quite as good as ones that I make, and so much easier ..........which is very useful when there are loads of other things to do on Christmas morning.

I was just watching a TV programme which mentioned you could freeze your own roast potatoes - must admit I'd never even considered doing this. Quite a good idea to do your own when it's nice and quiet, then take them out of the freezer early Xmas morning and heat them through for 20 minutes or so. Might give it a go beforehand to see how it works.

Different thing but I fill my oven and make loads of jacket potatoes - proper ones cooked with heat not microwaved. I let them cool and then wrap in clingfilm and freeze. When required they can be microwaved from frozen but still taste like 'proper' jackets.
  • Can any of you roastie experts advise me about what oil to use for roasting if you have a veggie coming for Christmas dinner. Obviously goose fat and any other animal fat is out. Would you use olive oil, ordinary vegetable oil etc? Thanks for your help.
  • We buy the Aldi frozen roasties. they are made with maris piper potatoes and at only 69p a bag are very good value. My husband thinks they are delicious.

Having got veggie daughters i would say use olive oil or a mixture od rapeseed oil and olive. Sometimes just using olive can be a bit overpowering. I also when doing my own roasties , par boil, drain then shake in pan andd coat them in flour then put on oil, this gives a nice crunchy coating.

...what oil to use for roasting if you have a veggie coming for Christmas dinner...

Just watching Jamie Oliver doing three lots of roast pots - one in goose fat, one in butter and one in olive oil - he said all three were different but the butter and goose seemed to have the scrunchiest outside and the olive oil were the lightest. He said they were all great but you can't taste on the telly.
