Bisto ones aren't bad ~ much better than Aunt Bessies, who I agree, are dry!

I noticed that Iceland are doing goose fat frozen pots, haven't tried them though and won't because it's upto me to make homemade ones (which OH does the rest of the dinner!).

Aunt Bessies are good if you do them in the deep fat fryer with good quality oil. Not dry at all! :)

My nan has always made amazing roast potatoes and when she switched over to using frozen ones (she can't spend a long time cooking nowadays due to sight/health problems) we barely noticed the difference. For years now she's sworn by Sainsbury's King Edward potatoes in goose fat.

At home we've tried a few - Iceland (which are quite dry and need a lot of extra time than stated for them to go crispy), Sainsbury's, Somerfield - but the best has definitely been Asda Extra Special King Edwards in goose fat, they were amazing! It's just a shame we don't have an Asda anywhere near us - if we want them I have to pick them up near work and lug them across London on the tube!
  • Can anyone tell me roughlly how many the Tesco finest ones serve. We are trying to make Christmas dinner as easy as possible this year to try and have more time with family and less time in the kitchen. There will be 4 adults and 2 children so not sure how many packs to get?

Everyone does Christmas dinner differently I know and for some people that means doing everything for scratch. For me the most important thing about Christmas is the people I am with and in all honesty I would be just as happy eating sausage and mash!

    Thanks for any advice

We parboil lots of potatoes when we buy them and freeze them. Then when we want roast potatoes, we heat up some goose fat and whack the potatoes in at a high heat.

It works really well, particularly because the potatoes are a bit bashed and you get the crunchy edges...hmmm yum.

    too many comps..not enough time!

Tired Mom - don't know about the Finest ones, but a kilo bag of Tesco's standard roasties last us (2 adults, 3 kids) a meal, with 1-2 kids servings left in the bag. All depends on how many you each have though - for 6, I'd probably pick up 2 bags.

Will have to try the Finest ones - they sound nice :)

I must try them then, if they are on offer especially.

    Thanks.

If you have a Waitrose by you they are only £1.50 at the moment! They are around £2ish normally.

The Tesco Garlic and Rosemary roast potatoes are really nice too! The too are on offer at 00p down from £1.49! I have a pack of them and the Tesco finest in the freezer waiting for the big day although i dont know which is going to have the pleasure of gracing the dinner table as yet!

lol you meant they are down to 99p. I bought those last week and though they are nice I find them dry. Can't wait to open the Finest roasties in goose fat.
  • Many of the supermarkets ready made frozen roasties have a light flour batter on them, which puts me off a bit, I'd honestly rather par-bake and freeze my own when doing a roast the Sunday before to use on Christmas day.
