Product Recall? Plum climbing frames

Options
I've had a call to let me know that our Plum Eldorado climbing frame has a fault and is being recalled! Apparently the swing arm is poor quality and will fall apart and needs to be completely replaced...I don't like thinking about what could have happened had they not got in touch. I did think that Plum was a quality brand, obviously not.

I have an Eldorado climbing frame but apparently most of the Plum range is being recalled (anything with a swing arm)!

Just thought you guys should know....anyone else heard anything?

The fact that they've gone out of their way to contact all customers such as yourself shows that that they are a decent outfit.

Any company can have a problem, it's the way that deals with a problem that sorts the wheat from the chaff.
  • The fact that almost every climbing frame they make has quality issues isn't a little worrying?

I actually contacted them at the end of the summer to complain about the wood cracking, they have simply called me to confirm that they would be replacing the wood that I complained about and advised about the recall.

I was posting on here to see if their other customers had been contacted yet (as you would expect with a competent firm, as you say) or whether I have been contacted because of my complaint!
  • i got a safety recall letter in the post last week.
  • This has now taken a big step forwards. Apparently the entire play center is to be recalled on a similar safety issue. Argos have been in touch with us today offering collection and a refund of £199.00, against a play center that was purchased three years ago for around £500.00. Is it just me or does an offer of £199.00 seem unreasonably low?

(Ours is a Tacoma/Sedona. The Durango/Belmont range is to be included in the recall)

I bought my Tacoma PlayCentre 3 or 4 years ago...again for about £500. I got my letter today, and was offered £116.00. What an insult.

I have already been onto Argos and demanded a full refund, or a replacement item of equal value. I am waiting for a call from a "senior manager".

What are our rights in this matter? I would have expected to be offered a replacement of the offending parts, (or as that covers most of the unit), a replacement of a similarly priced product....not £116.00.

Partial refunds are allowed under the sale of goods act, the deductions should be relative to the use the customer has had. So by their offering, they reckon your set should have lasted 4-5 years which is a very bad estimation. You should say that although they can give a partial refund, you expect the set to last at lease 7 years or so which mean you expect about £250. That seems fair to me.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

I most certainly DO NOT expect ANY refund. However, my children still use the climbing frame (or did until I was notified that it might be dangerous), and I fully expected it to last for another 5 years.

I even treated the visible wood last year in a bid to extend its longevity. I did not see why it would not provide enjoyment for my grand daughter who is now 1 in 3 or 4 years time. I dont think that, with taking proper care of it, I should not expect that.

What I expect is for the manufacturer to replace the weakened structure. If they are not willing to do that, then I expect a replacement climbing frame of similar size and construction.

What they are offering me is an insult, especially when the nearest compareable unit is about £800 in their current catalogue.
  • I too have recieved a letter offering me £174.99 'which reflects a deduction for the length of time you have owned this product'. It seems from the above that perhaps they are using a sliding scale for refund calcualtion depending on length of time owned.....

I also retreated the visible parts last summer, and have also had a rung break before the original notification (fortunately on the ladder part not the monkey bars) which caused a minor injury to my sons shin.

I came here for advise, as I am also in the process of a similar claim with my television, and this seems a similar situation.

I think I am going to fire a letter back asking for a full equivalent replacement or a significantly improved offer given the length of time their current offer suggests the playset would last.

    What do others think?
