I did that with apples but they didn't last very long ;)

but you've just reminded me that someone sliced through the pear, dabbed on lemon juice and pressed the slices between blotting paper, then framed them. She did red skinned apples too but they didn't turn out so well.
  • This afternoon I made this pear frangipane tart using this pastry and pears from the garden :D Declared delicious by the children :j

  • Hi all! My lovely next door neighbour keeps giving me bags of pears from the trees in his garden. Although I am very grateful and the kids and I love them (although OH isnt too keen) can I make them into some kind of pudding? I think if the kids see another pear in their packed lunch they might leave home. Anyone got any ideas?

Funny you should ask this question, I found a tin of pears in the cupboard this evening and wondered if a pear crumble would be nice to use it up.

Also I've seen on various restaurant menus pears poached in red wine. I've never tried it but always thought it sounds nice. Here is one recipe I found.
  • I make pears in chocolate sponge.

Peel and core pears. Poach in a little water until soft. Lay in a suitable dish without juice. Make up a Victoria sponge recipe - 2 eggs, 4 oz SR flour, 4 oz butter, 4 oz sugar and mix in a tablespoon of cocoa powder. Pour over pears and bake until firm. Serve with custard.

Could you make chutney? Someone will have a recipe, I'm sure.

someone gave me a bag of pears a couple of weeks ago and I made 1 x
apple & pear eve's pudding and several portions of pears in spiced wine which I froze for easy, quick puds ready for guests etc. Also threw a few in chutney.
Pears and chocolate do go well together like quilt suggests. I had some yummy pancakes in france that were filled with pears and choc sauce. This could be served with ice cream, creme fraiche or cream. Pears Belle Helene rings a bell - I'll have a look for a recipe for you.

This is a bit OTT, but you could simplify it

This is a much simpler version - I'm sure you could poach the pears, freeze, then serve some other time with the choc sauce

You could peel, slice and lightly cook the pears and then beat them in as the fruit ingredient in a cake. (I use 4oz each fat and sugar, 6oz flour, 2 eggs as my base mixture) I did this last week using apples and a handful of oats and the resulting cake is good as either a pudding or a sliceable cake.

I like this pear chutney, I normally make a couple of kilos a year and it lasts me until next season:

but I think it tastes better if you replace the raisins with dried figs :) I've also been lazy in the past and just dumped in a sachet or two of pickling spice instead of all the indiviual spices and it works fine.

There are some lovely ideas on this thread so I've added it to the main pears thread to keep the suggestions together.
